Scott posted a four-over-par 74 to tumble down the leaderboard from a share of sixth at the start of the round after leaking four shots in his last four holes in Rochester, New York on Friday.

The former World No.1 slipped from two-under to two-over to be trailing co-leaders Corey Connors, Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland by seven shots at the conclusion of the second round.

Scott had been cruising in red numbers for most of the day until his late stumbles.

He also undid some great work on Thursday with a double bogey six at the last hole, having shared the lead during the first round.

Starting his second round on the 10th tee, Scott recovered from an early bogey at the par-5 13th with immediate back-to-back birdies, only to bogey the 16th hole and eventually make the turn in even par for the day two-under overall.

Five straight pars allowed him to keep touch with the top of the leaderboard before the difficult 6th hole reared its head.

The Queenslander’s second shot missed right of the green and a flop shot from the thick rough ran across the green and despite a good first putt, Scott dropped a shot.

Perhaps with a little adrenaline running, Scott smashed his tee shot on the 7th that took a big first bounce that eventually saw the ball trickle into the hazard that dissects the par-4 and a tap-in for a double bogey six.

Another bogey, and fourth dropped shot in three holes, came at the 8th, his second last hole of the day after Scott’s second shot with a pitching wedge went deep into the green and the 40-year-old needed three putts to get down.

The variation in Scott’s performance from round-to-round mostly caused by errant driving, with the 2013 Masters Champion struggling to find fairways on Friday and Oak Hill’s tricky rough causing approach play headaches.

He now sits in a share of 30th with a lot of work to do if he is to contend for his coveted second major title.

Meanwhile, Min Woo Lee leads the Australian contingent after a three-under 67 to share 10th at even par, with Cam Davis one shot back. Lucas Herbert and Cam Smith were the only other Aussies to make the weekend, the pair finishing 36 holes on four-over.

Jason Day (+8) and David Micheluzzi (+9) will play no further part in the championship after memorable weeks for both last week in Texas.
