KARRIE CLAIMS AUSSIE OPEN NO.5

Australia’s greatest ever female golfer, Karrie Webb, has added to her legend by claiming a record fifth ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open title.

She arrived at Victoria Golf Club earlier in the week with a game that was a little rusty. But with each passing round she found improvement and she will follow the LPGA Tour to Thailand this week with her game in great shape and another win on her resume. It is her 56th win since turning professional two decades ago and her 40th on the LPGA Tour. Her last Australian Open victory, down the road at Kingston Heath, was back in 2008.

SUMMERS SHINES AT QLD PGA

New South Welshman Anthony Summers has won the 2014 Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship at the City Golf Club in Toowoomba.

Shooting 24 under 256, this is Summers’ first four round victory since turning professional in 1991, having previously finished runner-up in several events including the NSW Open twice.

“I’m ecstatic, relieved, elated, I’m just feeling a whole mix of emotions at the moment,” said Summers.

“I’ve had a lot of chances to win in the past so to have e a three shot buffer on the last was fantastic.”

“I was still as nervous as a kitten on the 18th hole, my heart was beating a million miles a minute.”

IN BUBBA WE TRUST

Bubba Watson captured his first PGA Tour title since the 2012 Masters with an imposing 14-under par weekend to win the Northern Trust Open by two strokes.

Watson carded consecutive 64s at storied Riviera Country Club to move from mid-pack at the halfway mark to champion, coupling his typically swashbuckling play with bogey-free control. Watson had double-bogeyed two of his first three holes to start the tournament but found his groove on the weekend to reach 15-under par.

His 64 on Sunday was the best final round at the famous Los Angeles venue since Australia’s Steve Elkington closed with the same score en route to capturing the 1995 US PGA Championship.

Dustin Johnson shot a five-under 66 to finish 13-under and claim the runner-up spot for the second straight week, while Monday-qualifier Jason Allred shared third place with left-hander Brian Harman at 12-under. Another past Masters winner, Charl Schwartzel, was fifth.

The overnight leader, William McGirt, never threatened Watson and Johnson in carding a 73, while George McNeill and 2013 runner-up Charlie Beljan also fell back early on Sunday. Of the Australians, Aaron Baddeley sat a shot off the lead after 36 holes but fell back to share 18th with John Senden at seven-under.

Watson plundered Riviera for seven birdies on Sunday, including one at the 18th hole to punctuate victory when a par was enough to seal it. However, he won this Northern Trust Open as much with his accuracy off the tee as his famous long drives. Watson ranked equal eighth for fairways hit, first for driving distance and equal third for greens in regulation. He was also in the top-ten for putts per green hit.

Watson’s return to form – he was joint runner-up at the Waste Management Phoenix Open a fortnight ago – is an ominous sign ahead of the season’s first major in 52 days’ time.

AIKEN THE HOMETOWN HERO

South African Thomas Aiken rolled in a long birdie putt at the first extra hole to defeat Englishman Oliver Fisher at the Africa Open at East London Golf Club in coastal South Africa.

Aiken used an eagle at the par-5 3rd – a hole he played in six-under par for the week – to vault into the lead before enduring a tight battle with Fisher. The pair finished 72 holes locked at 20-under, a stroke ahead of England’s David Horsey and American John Hahn.

Fisher’s hopes died suddenly in sudden death, however, Aiken’s 35-foot birdie putt guaranteeing victory at the first extra hole as Fisher pondered a 15-footer for par. The five-year-old tournament might be known as the Africa Open, but only South Africans have claimed the title, with Aiken’s victory preceded by champions Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen (twice) and Darren Fichardt.

Aiken, whose wife Kate caddied for him for the first time, suggested she might have found herself a permanent role. The three-time Tour winner also paid tribute to his home fans, having won only abroad during his European Tour career.

“I’ve been waiting for this for quite some time. I’ve won a couple of times overseas, but there is nothing like winning in front of a home crowd,” said Aiken, who finished fifth in his past two events and has already recorded six top-20 finishes on the 2014 Race to Dubai. “The South African fans have been unbelievable throughout my whole career so it’s nice to finally get one for you guys.”

Overnight leader Emiliano Grillo imploded with a nightmare quintuple-bogey nine on the 1st hole in an outward 43. The Argentinean did save face by birdieing his last five holes for an inward 30 to share fifth place, two shots shy of the play-off.
