West Australian teenage amateur Minjee Lee has been knocking on the door and she has finally done it in winning her first women’s professional golf tournament, the Oates Vic Open.

The current Australian amateur champion fired a final round six under 68 on the Beach course at Thirteenth Beach Golf Links to finish at the top of the leaderboard at 16 under and streak the field by six shots.

Lee, didn’t have it her own way, as she got off to a nervous start with a bogey, birdie, bogey run through the opening three holes. The large gallery following the last group unsettled the 17-year-old for the first few holes. However, after the 4th hole she settled into her round and started playing well and making birdies.

She birdied the 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th hole to take a commanding five shot lead into the back nine. A further two birdies at the 11th and 12th made the final six holes relatively stress free.

She was thrilled with her first professional win, “It feels unbelievable, it hasn’t really sunk in yet, I’m pretty happy and just stoke that I have won.”

Asked when she thought she had it in the bag, “I saw the leaderboard after 15, and I was like, I just have to finish nicely and I’ll be OK.”

The win doesn’t change her plans for the year, but it certainly has given her confidence that she can compete with the pros. She plans to play a select number of Tour events as well as major amateur tournaments before heading to the LPGA Qualifying School at the end of the year.

Scotland's Vikki Laing finished outright second. The Scot came from nowhere at the halfway point to fire rounds of 67 and 66 on the weekend to finish at 10-under-par. As Lee is an amateur Laing will take home the cheque for $22,500. Outright third was Queensland's Sarah Jane Smith (73) on eight under.

NSW Sarah Kemp (68) and another amateur, Su Oh (72) gfrom Victoria shared fourth position at seven-under-par. A further shot back was American Hannah Jun (69) and ACT’s Nikki Campbell (71). Victorian Lindsey Wright (70) moved up into the top 10 with a final round of 70 to finish at three-under-par.

Kemp's high finish ensured she became the first multiple winner of the Club Car Series Bonus Pool at the conclusion of the Oates Vic Open.

The 28-year-old won the title back in the 2009/2010 ALPG Tour season and this season once again finished on top of the points table with strong performances throughout the seven events.

Kemp’s solid season included three runner-up finishes in the Inghams Antill Park Pro-am, Mt Broughton Classic and Renault Ladies Pro-am at Castle Hill Country Club events. The LPGA based player also finished 5th in the Pro-ams at Yamba and Moss Vale. Kemp secured her win with her T4 finish in the Oates Vic Open.

Kemp was delighted to be taking home a trophy and a cheque for $6,500 from Club Car.
