Think about what you can do in 12 hours? You could fly half way to London or, as Tom Hughson will, hit 1,200 golf balls trying to make a hole-in-one for charity.
Think about what you can do in 12 hours? Drive from Perth to Kalgoorlie and back or fly from half way to London. Tom Hughson plans to fill that time hitting golf balls, all in the name of charity.

Hitting into the Light 2, the HOLE-IN-1 CHALLENGE is something a little crazy. Hughson says it is all about challenging himself physically and mentally, while raising money and awareness for beyondblue.
“I once heard great distance runner Rob De Castella say, ‘doing something that is physically challenging is great for a persons wellbeing’ and that is exactly why I am going to push my physical limits,” Hughson says.
“An average game of golf is four to five hours long and an average player hits between 80 to 100 shots. For this challenge, I plan to hit 100 balls per hour for 12 hours, to try and get as many holes in one as possible.”
Hughson, who has not had a hole-in-one in nearly 15 years of playing golf, suggests that to get an idea of how hard this challenge will be, swing your arms continuously around your body for 60 seconds.
“I will be swinging a golf club every 30 seconds for 12 hours,” he added.
Hughson will undertake the challenge on February 6 at The Western Australian Golf Club, in Perth’s northern suburbs. With thanks to golf club professional Vernon Sexton-Finck, the club’s driving range will be converted into a purpose made golf hole (legal size and approximately 130 metres long).
Every single cent of money raised by Hughson will be donated to beyondblue. With the goal to hit 1,200 golf shots in 12 hours, he will have the opportunity to score that elusive hole-in-one.
The first 10 holes-in-one scored will also have a prize attached.
For your chance to donate and maybe get one of these prizes, make a $5 donation, per ball is the cost. By donating a higher dollar amount, for example a $50 donation, you will get a block of 10 balls (ie: 10 x $5 balls).
The first people to donate will get the first choice of numbered balls. In the case of a hole-in-one being scored on your numbered ball (the balls are not physically numbered, the number of the shot is tracked on the day and matched to the spreadsheet of everyone that donates), your donation is doubled.
The other side of this is if your ball is not hit (ie Tom does not make it through the 12 hours) all numbered balls that have not been hit, donations will be refunded.
“I am really pushing myself. Even though I love golf, this is going to one of the biggest physical and mental challenges I have attempted,” Hughson says.
The more donations made the more Tom must play and you get a chance to say you sponsored a hole in one in golf as well.
