Most golf days, no matter whether they are for charity or a corporate event, have spots in the field filled mostly by men and the small number of women playing is almost a token presence.

But one golf day has turned the tables on the sexes and now it’s the men who will be ‘Token Blokes’ with half of the field being dedicated to women.

Sports presenter Tiffany Cherry is the brainchild behind the Token Blokes golf event.

Earlier this year, sports presenter, Tiffany Cherry was asked by Drummond Golf and Callaway to become an ambassador. Not because as, Cherry puts it, "of my golf prowess", but in an effort to attract more women to the game. After hosting the London Olympics last year for Foxtel, Cherry returned to Melbourne to bring back her own radio show, The Hen House on the 24-hour sports station, SEN. Six years ago Cherry started the program – that gives equal voice to women and less profile sports as it gives to sports that always make the headlines – before moving to the US to work for ESPN. With her audience ratings doubling, both golf brands saw Cherry's potential to tap into the under-represented female market.

"Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity, but instead of just taking their clubs and accepting invitations to play at wonderful golf courses for promoting golf through my media channels, I really wanted to make a difference," says Cherry.

She then came up with the idea of the Token Blokes golf day where, instead of a few “token chicks” playing, “I decided to cheekily turn the tables on the sexes and call the guys, 'Token Blokes' and dedicate at least half of the spots in the field to women."

The inaugural Spondo Token Blokes Golf Day will be held on Monday November 25 at The Heritage Country Club, in the Yarra Valley east of Melbourne.

More than 50 male and female corporates will join a host of celebrities for the day including 2006 US Open Champion, Geoff Ogilvy, two-time European Ladies Tour winner, Stacey Keating, Olympic swimming champion and Seven presenter, Giaan Rooney, Australian cricketer Alyssa Healey, legendary former fast bowler, Merv Hughes, and 2013 AFL Premiership player, Jordan Lewis.

Euro Tour winner Stacey Keating will be on hand to give tips in support of the golf day.

Players will tee of on the Jack Nicklaus signature St John course with a female professional joining each group to offer tips, while also having the chance to win some cash herself and tap into networking opportunities. And for those ladies who can't play, a champagne golf clinic is on offer.

"Females in the workplace are rarely invited to play because they either can't, are intimidated or simply overlooked. Subsequently, they miss out not only on the social and fitness benefits of golf, but many business deal that are brokered on the fairways,” Cherry said.

“The Drummond Golf Clinic gives them a taste of the game from three 'Token Bloke' pros, while sipping champagne and have a laugh. Hopefully they catch the bug and put their hand up to play in the golf round next year."

All 'Token Bloke' celebrities will be asked to become a White Ribbon ambassador, with the Foundation sharing the date to promote its annual day to end violence towards women. While all money raised for the fully sponsored event will be donated to Koala Kids, a program of the Children's Cancer Centre Foundation.

Anyone interested in catching the action can log onto www.tokenblokes.com.au with naming partner, Spondo, a Melbourne founded on-line tech company positioning itself as the eBay of video, live streaming the field's attempt to win a Bib Stillwell BMW 1 series for a Hole in One on the par-3 11th. There are also limited spots available for the clinic at $195, which includes a two-and-a-half hour lesson, champagne, morning tea and lunch.

"And if you happen to miss this one," says Cherry. “There will be plenty more next year. Golf Victoria is looking to continue partnering with me to roll out another four in 2014. We plan to significantly build the numbers of females of all ages playing this fantastic game."
