Spotlight: Commonwealth Golf Club
Brian Slawnik and Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design have long been unabashed fans of the Sandbelt, and of Commonwealth Golf Club in particular. When asked to redesign the course, the first thing Slawnik told members was that it’s already great and that RGD would approach the work as preservationists. What Slawnik, RGD and Commonwealth greens staff did since has reimagined and reinvigorated one of Australia’s great courses.

CLEARY: Golf addiction explained by a round on the Sandbelt
And so to Commonwealth GC on the famous Melbourne ‘Sandbelt’ where one may only take a good-sized divot to create a world-class bunker complex, and where we enjoyed a round with the great Nick O’Hern, the great Damien Oliver, and the not as great though if he continues on his current career trajectory may well be, Lukas Michel, who works with Mike Clayton’s architecture mob and is one of Australia’s gun amateur golfers. And it was a bloody great day out.
