EQUIPMENT NOTES:
- Despite victory at the Hero Open marking Horsfield’s first European Tour win, the 23-year-old is a familiar name to many keen golf fans, having been identified as a future talent by Ryder Cup star and fellow Florida resident Ian Poulter as a young man. Horsfield, typically among the longest players on the European Tour, relied on accuracy this week, ranking in the top-20 for driving accuracy and greens in regulation, using the same model driver as Tiger Woods as well as the irons designed by TaylorMade for the 15-time major winner.
- With three brands represented in his equipment setup and a Nike apparel contract, Horsfield has taken the approach of many of his fellow players of finding what works for him, including a Bettinardi putter. The Englishman’s flatstick saw significant statistical improvement this week, while the brand also managed a win on the Korn Ferry Tour. Well known to those keen on equipment, Bettinardi putters are manufactured in Chicago, were formerly a production site of Scotty Cameron putters and played a crucial part in the increased popularity of machine milling for putters.
Having made a bogey six at the par-5 17th on Saturday Horsfield’s birdie on Sunday after a magnificent fairway wood approach secured his maiden win by one shot over Belgium’s Thomas Detry and gave Titleist a double win weekend on the European Tour, with Justin Thomas’ WGC win also a European Tour event.
QUOTE: “I probably hit one of the best shots I’ve hit in my life on 17 and it paid off."– Sam Horsfield.
