EQUIPMENT NOTES:

  • McIlroy’s 23rd PGA Tour win came with the same setup he claimed the season ending Tour Championship recently. Like many Tour pros, Rory finds a 3-wood he is comfortable with and sticks with it even when new models are released, the “go to” club off the tee on tighter driving holes in McIlroy’s case an older SIM Ti. Although the newly returned World No.1 has inserted a newer model at times that offers a different flight and carry distance variation.

  • As is the case with a number of TaylorMade staff players, McIlroy uses a set of blade irons bearing his name as a prototype set. Modelled off the P•730 MB iron, the profile is customised to each player, with the Northern Irishman using his set to find 71 percent of greens in regulation around the tricky Congaree setup.

  • The 33-year-old was an early adopter of the now widely popular Fujikura Ventus driver shaft that dominates the PGA Tour. Fitted in a Stealth Plus model marked with 9° of loft but turned down lower via the adjustable hosel to carry 7.5°, McIlroy average nearly 350 yards off the tee in South Carolina.

  • As was the case in the 2021/22 season, McIlroy gives TaylorMade’s TP5 range of golf balls its first win of the new PGA Tour season with his second straight CJ Cup victory.

QUOTE: “I think just the journey of trying to get the best out of myself. I think that's the satisfying thing. I never feel like I've figured this game out, I don't think I ever will figure it out, but every day I wake up trying to get closer.” – Rory McIlroy.
