EQUIPMENT NOTES:
Herman was, as always, extremely accurate off the tee this week, however, it was his iron play and putting that were vastly improved and led to a third PGA Tour victory and second since turning 40. Herman led the field in Greens In Regulation for the week, including missing just four during his weekend rounds of 61 and 63. Herman uses a combination set of Mizuno’s JPX919 irons that are also the choice of Brooks Koepka, the line’s replacement – JPX921 – announced by the Japanese manufacturer just last week.
- The 43-year-old, who counts US President Donald Trump among his regular playing partners, had a change of fortune on the greens in North Carolina having changed putter models and techniques after a disappointing weekend at the US PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park. Herman went back to an old Bettinardi mallet putter and switched to a cross hand grips, meaning his three Tour wins have come with three putting grips. Herman also giving Bettinardi a double win weekend, with Sam Horsfield claiming a second win in three weeks on the European Tour with one of the Chicago based manufacturer’s putters.
Herman’s win is the fifth with a TaylorMade driver since the PGA Tour’s restart and second in a row after Collin Morikawa’s maiden major win, while his performance at the Wyndham Championship delivers Titleist’s Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls their 13th PGA Tour win in 2020, with 10 of the top-12 this week opting for a Titleist golf ball.
QUOTE: “I just switched this week, new putter … new old putter from Bettinardi and cross-handed. I just got my ball started online where I wanted with the correct speed, so that's all you can want. I made a lot of putts this week.” – Jim Herman.
