An unheralded local duo are in the midst of a birdie barrage to climb up the leaderboard at the Women's Australian Open.

Victorian Stephanie Bunque and West Australian Kirsten Rudgeley have both moved to four under in the second round at Adelaide's Kooyonga Golf Club.

The local pair are two strokes shy of overnight leader Darcey Harry, the Welsh golfer teeing off later on Friday.

Germany's Alexandra Forsterling, also yet to tee off on Friday, holds outright second spot at five under.

Bunque, the world No.620, has fired four birdies in seven holes to make inroads with eight holes remaining in her second round.

And world No.132 Rudgeley is also making a move after carding four consecutive birdies - and six all-up in her second round, which also includes two bogeys - to be four under through 13 holes.

Kelsey Bennett (three under) and Australia's major winners  Hannah Green (two under) and Minjee Lee (even par) are yet to start their second rounds.

Another local major winner, Grace Kim, remains at three over  after 15 holes in her second round - she has carded two birdies and two bogeys on Friday.

The 31 locals in the field are bidding to become the first Australian  to win the Open in a dozen years.

The most recent Australian to salute was Karrie Webb, who captured her fifth Open title in 2014, following wins by Jane Crafter (1997) and Jan Stephenson (1977).
