Representatives of six-time major winner Phil Mickelson have described allegations of inappropriate behaviour levelled at him as an "anonymously sourced drive-by shooting".
Last month Golf Digest claimed the left-hander's membership at The Farms Golf Club in San Diego had been removed after a female employee accused him of inappropriate contact.
A follow-up investigation by the golf publication Skratch featured further allegations about Mickelson's conduct from Ashley Perez, the ex-wife of fellow professional Pat Perez.
In a statement to the New York Post, the golfer's representatives said that the report omitted key details and claimed it was a misunderstanding for which Mickelson had apologised.
"Mr Mickelson has never been expelled from a golf club. His membership has never been revoked by a golf club. Those decisions were his alone," read the statement.
"Mr Mickelson's willingness to apologise for his conduct should not be misconstrued as an admission of every allegation made against him."
The statement went on to say the Skratch report was "a compelling, clickbait narrative over an accurate one" and an "anonymously sourced drive-by shooting".
Skratch's editor-in-chief Ben Boskovich told the New York Post the publication "stands by its reporting".
