Six Aussie hopefuls line up in France for the Amundi Evian Championship, the fourth women’s major of the season. Here are all the important details for each, including why they can win.
MINJEE LEE
Age: 27
World Ranking: 7
Amundi Evian Championships Played: Eight
Best finish at the Evian: Win (2021)
Best Major result: Win (2021 Evian, 2022 U.S Women’s Open)
Why she can win: A win feels close for Australia’s highest-ranked player, the former champion has been trending towards something big, and it could be in France this week. The West Australian hasn’t finished outside the top-20 in any of her last six starts on the LPGA Tour – two of those majors. The success of Minjee’s week will hinge on the putter turning up, ranked fifth on Tour in greens in regulation hitting 73.3 percent of greens, the 27-year-old is ranked 125th in putting this season. She will contend if she can find a fraction of her best stuff on the greens.
Odds: $23
HANNAH GREEN
Age: 26
World Ranking: 20
Amundi Evian Championships Played: Three
Best finish at the Evian: T30 (2022)
Best Major result: Win (2019 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship)
Why she can win: Already a major champion and a winner on the LPGA Tour this season, Green has the tools to be successful around the Evian Resort Golf Club. Good iron play will be vital, as well as there being a premium on playing from the fairway, and the West Australian is exceptional with her irons. If she can find more fairways than she misses, she will be able to use this to her advantage. Her underrated short game will also come into play around Evian, with some tricky spots and thick rough to contend with. No doubt the 26-year-old is right up for the challenge and is primed to add to her major tally.
Odds: $61
GRACE KIM
Age: 22
World Ranking: 55
Amundi Evian Championships Played: Debut
Best finish at the Evian: N/A
Best Major result: T13 (2023 U.S Women’s Open)
Why she can win: It is well documented that Kim has won at every level so far, including saluting in her third start as an LPGA Tour member and has had strong finishes at the last two majors T13 (U.S Women’s Open) and 14th (KPMG Women’s PGA Championship). Her all-round game is superb, which will only help the Sydneysider around major championship venues, at serious value too. She will be involved on the weekend if form is anything to go by, and her extremely accurate driving is a major asset here this week.
Odds: $67
STEPH KYRIACOU
Age: 22
World Ranking: 109
Amundi Evian Championships Played: Two
Best finish at the Evian: T31 (2022)
Best Major result: T7 (2022 AIG Women’s Open)
Why she can win: Kyriacou has proven she can put runs on the board at major championships, especially last season. T10 at the KPMG Women’s PGA and T7 at the AIG Women’s Open, Kyriacou has the ability to go seriously low and make runs of birdies out of nowhere, so monitor the leaderboard because she could make a run at the lead from anywhere. One thing is certain, Kyriacou will not die wondering and will play with plenty of charisma to try to pluck off a major of her own.
Odds: $151
SARAH KEMP
Age: 37
World Ranking: 167
Amundi Evian Championships Played: Seven
Best finish at the Evian: T19 (2021)
Best Major result: T19 (2021 Amundi Evian Championship)
Why she can win: The most experienced campaigner of the Aussie contingent, Kemp’s accuracy will definitely help her around the Evian Resort Golf Club. The rough is a severe punishment, so as mentioned previously, finding the fairway will be paramount to success. Kemp compliments her premier accuracy with a touch of class around the greens and having started the year strong will use all of her experience to chase her best finish at a major. Solid result partnering Alena Sharp at the Dow Great Lakes is a positive omen.
Odds: $401
KARIS DAVIDSON
Age: 25
World Ranking: 269
Amundi Evian Championships Played: Debut
Best finish at the Evian: N/A
Best Major result: T56 (2023 Chevron Championship)
Why she can win: On Amundi Evian Championship debut, Davidson into the week with no prior experience will hopefully free her up to play her natural game and put a performance on the board. A tough customer with plenty of grit, giving up will never be an option for the Scottish-born Queenslander. Will make putts when she needs to; if everything falls into place and the tournament turns into a scrap, Davidson could sneak up on some of the tournament favourites.
Odds: $501
