PGA TOUR - 3M OPEN

Is it possible to bounce back from a pair of 80s to miss the cut by plenty and contend the next week? If it is possible, then DUSTIN JOHNSON might just be the man to do it. That said, he'll have to start hitting the ball on the planet as TPC Twin Cities has been 'tweaked' by the PGA Tour with fairways narrowed and longer rough now in play.

As one of the last returning top players it is hard to know exactly where TOMMY FLEETWOOD’s game is right now but I think he will make a splash here. The Englishman went very close to claiming his first PGA Tour win before professional golf was shut down and that missed opportunity will have given him plenty of motivation to work hard during his break. A tidy 63 at Shinnecock Hills last week when playing with caddie Ian Finnis is enough to get my backing fresh off a spell.

The majors are approaching and BROOKS KOEPKA needs to find some form before attempting to complete his US PGA Championship hat-trick at TPC Harding Park. The former World No.1 has only posted the solitary top-10 finish (T7th at the RBC Heritage in June) this season and hasn’t won in 52 weeks. Despite finishing 65th here last year – with rounds of 67, 72, 67 and 72 – I’m happy to back him in against the likes of Dustin Johnson and Tommy Fleetwood knowing he at least has some course knowledge.

A horror front nine at Muirfield Sunday cruelled any chance TONY FINAU had of grabbing a second PGA Tour title but he showed great tenacity in fighting back from that opening 42 with an even par 36 and that will hold him in good stead this week. Four sub 70 rounds at this event last year saw him finish T23 and after the brutality of Muirfield Village at the weekend, TPC Twin Cities will feel like a pitch and putt.

EUROPEAN TOUR - BETFRED BRITISH MASTERS

Brendan James – Golf Australia Editor

While many will like the chances of tournament host Lee Westwood, I don't think he can match it with young West Aussie MIN WOO LEE. The big-hitting 21-year-old, already a winner this year, returns to the European Tour for his first start since March and the course this week will suit him. All three par-5s are within easy reach and if he can minimise errors elsewhere, he can post double-digit red numbers and be in contention Sunday afternoon.

With many of the bigger names in Europe making their first start here I think a slightly surprising winner could emerge this week. ROBERT ROCK, owner of the best head of hair on Tour and one of the best golf swings, will have spent much of his time off teaching his students that include a number of fellow Tour players, but never needs much work himself to find the centre of the clubface. Generally strong playing at home in England, I think Rock will certainly better his T37 at this venue in 2017 and likely surpass his T29 from last year if the putts fall early and his confidence lifts.

Tournament host LEE WESTWOOD says he has been playing at Close House three or four times per week in recent times – and he proved he still has the ability to win on Tour when he earned his 25th title in Abu Dhabi in January. The English veteran should prove hard to hold out.

The European Tour's big names return to competition for the BetFred British Masters at a venue that will be a mystery to many. Host Lee Westwood will attract much of the smart money at Close House in Newcastle but after the longest break of his professional career look out for SCOTT HEND to perhaps make an impact. As always, things could go either way with Hend but his enthusiasm won’t be in any doubt and that might just be the spark for some good play.
