Despite its outstanding drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges and more, it is almost impossible not to associate PING with putters.
The brand which ushered in modern putter design through the work of Karsten Solheim, most notably his Anser model, unveiling its latest range of flatsticks. The 2021 putter series including classics like the Anser and Anser2, more recent popular designs such as the Tyne in two neck varieties, as well as an Armlock model.
The new range built with a focus on maximum moment of inertia (MOI) delivered through multi-material designs.
“We’ve engineered a lot of score-lowering technology into the 2021 putter line through extensive research and Tour player feedback,” PING President and grandson to Karsten John K. Solheim said. “All of the models are developed with higher MOI through strategic use of various materials, including tungsten, steel and aluminum, to provide the forgiveness and accuracy golfers expect from a PING putter.”
To raise MOI in each of the eleven options throughout the range, PING incorporated aerospace-grade materials, using different combinations of stainless steel, aluminium and tungsten to increase stability and forgiveness.
Three Anser models offer variations in appearance and neck design and are crafted from stainless steel with tungsten weights in the heel and toe for the highest MOI ever achieved in the most famous putter model in golf.
To optimise the centre gravity (CG) location of the Kushin 4, DS 72 and Tyne 4 models, the steel heel weight combines with a tungsten weight in the toe, whereas the forgiving mallets, Fetch and Oslo H, feature a body cast from 304 stainless steel and aluminium sole plate to create optimal weight distribution.
Both using aluminium body construction, the CA 70 contains a heavy steel sole plate for lower CG, while the Harwood – offered in standard and Armlock – combines its 6061 aluminium body with four 93 gram tungsten weights to deliver the highest MOI of the 2021 putter series.
Beyond the MOI improvements, the 2021 putters deliver feel and performance through a dual-durometer insert.
The soft feel is achieved through the use of ‘PEBAX’ material in the insert construction, which combines a softer front section for improved short putting performance and a firmer back layer for feedback and distance control on long putts. The insert also incorporating shallow grooves for improved roll performance.
“The dual-durometer insert features uniform, shallow grooves to give golfers a soft, responsive feel for more consistent distance control with the precise touch they need to hole more putts,” Solheim said. “We’ve also advanced the visual cues depending on the model to help make alignment easier and more natural when addressing a putt.
“By combining the two hardnesses of the PEBAX material we’re providing a feel preference that appeals to a large segment of golfers while delivering the consistency golfers need to improve their ‘strokes gained: putting’ results. It is designed for the golfer who prefers a putter on the softer side of the feel spectrum but with the response of a firm face.”
Creating a premium look, a “stealth PVD finish” is applied to each head matching perfectly with a black chrome shaft, while three PING grip options are offered in the range to help each golfer dial in their stroke and feel preferences.
Offered in lengths from 32-38 inches (1/4” increments) and in PING’s adjustable shaft via custom order, the new models’ variations in toe hang, head style and head weight means there is a 2021 PING putter for every golfer and every stroke type. With many of the models influenced directly by the best players in the world.
“Eleven options ensure a putter to fit every golfer’s eye and stroke type,” Solheim said. “The line-up features new designs created through our Tour-focused PLD (Putting Lab Design) program, including versions inspired by PING professionals Viktor Hovland (DS 72) and Cameron Champ (Tyne 4).
“From blades to mallets and for straight, slight arc and strong-arc stroke types, it’s a complete line engineered to lower scores and increase enjoyment.”
