Cleary: Ryan Fox's golf swing a work of brutalist art
Ryan Fox's golf swing is a brutal work of art, according to our man Matt Cleary, and for most of Friday he was one off the lead. While a late stutter saw him drop to five-under and five behind leader and fellow Kiwi, Kazuma Kobori, at the halfway mark of the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland, Fox remains one to watch.

Revealed: why actor Michael Peña buys Golf Australia magazine in airports
Deputy Editor Matt Cleary strolled the back nine of Royal Queensland with actor Michael Peña, who is in Brisbane to shoot an action movie with Chris Hemsworth and compete in the Pro-Am of the Australian PGA Championship. On the way around, the Chicago native revealed a very good golf game, a garden variety golf addiction, and that whenever he's in an Australian airport, he is compelled to purchase the latest issue of Golf Australia magazine.

Golf, NRL and Las Vegas Equals Good Times In The Badlands
Attending the NRL’s Las Vegas annual season-opening showcase is wild enough, but the real fun begins when fans swap jerseys for golf clubs. From Wolf Creek’s cartoon-esque chaos to Cascata’s desert elegance, Nevada’s golf delivers big hits, bold curves and unforgettable thrills.

19 Holes With... Clint Rice
In a professional golf career that's spanned 22 years, Clint Rice followed in the footsteps of Mat Goggin, shared a dressing room with Greg Norman, and road-tested Barnbougle when it was a donger and a dream. Today he's known by a whole other strata of society as an “intruder” on a TV show about getting married without having met one's wife. All of which makes him good fodder for our "19 Holes With" treatment, and fine company for golf and a bottle of pinot noir, according to Deputy Editor, Matt Cleary.

19 Holes With... Cameron Daddo
Cameron Daddo spent nearly 25 years in Los Angeles, was a comrade of a young Indiana Jones, and once went low on the set of Happy Gilmore. Our man Matt Cleary tests out the Daddo golf game over 18 holes at Manly GC.

Course Review: St Andrews Beach
Tom Doak’s St Andrews Beach has been freshly-ranked the 89th best course in the world by a reputable website, and you will hear no argument from our Deputy Editor, who, on his first go-round, describes the course as “more fun than both Luna Parks”.

Cleary: America! Gift fourth major to the world
With news that Augusta National will confer Masters-qualification status on the winners of several national Opens, including our Australian Open, Matt Cleary argues that the governing bodies of world golf should spread the love further and convince the PGA of America to relinquish Major status of its U.S PGA Championship, and each year grant a different country's national Open the title of Major.

Cleary: Can't split Open and Masters, U.S Open next best, PGA last by length of Flemington Straight
Matt Cleary shouts at a cloud, a President, the PGA Championship, the Scottish Open, Aberdeen, Turnberry, lager beer, the Atlantic Ocean and the Filet-of-Fish.

Cleary: PGA's a bludger of a major, and two-time major champion can't change my mind
Many people agree that holding three of four major championships in the United States, particularly one that invites 20 club professionals from that country, should not be a thing in these globalised times. One two-time major champion and legend of Australian golf does not agree, however.

When a gin-slinging journo pal of Arnold Palmer's created golf's grand slam
The concept – some would describe it as a “construct” – of major championships, as we know them today, first gained traction in 1960, when Arnold Palmer was on his way to play the Open Championship at St Andrews after winning the Masters and U.S Open.

Cleary: PGA Championship is generic, beefed-up Tour event not befitting major status
It is the mangiest of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. It is the drummer in Spinal Tap. It is the character “Mike” – the not very funny one – in The Young Ones. It is a fifth wheel in a four-event swing. It is, of course, the United States PGA Championship, known as a “major” championship. And its time should be up, reckons Matt Cleary.

Cleary: If LIV Golf so wows Adelaide, why's it so 'meh' on TV?
The tourism industry loves it, the South Australian premier loves it, and the sports fans of Australia have voted with their feet. For the last two years the good burghers of the World Golf Awards have declared LIV Adelaide the best tournament in the world. It's passing odd, then, that LIV Golf remains a bit of a dud on television.

Cleary: LIV Adelaide and the power of people
On a mild April afternoon in 2022, day three of LIV Adelaide at The Grange, the enigmatic, cosmopolitan final group of Talor Gooch, Pat Perez and Charl Schwartzel were followed down the 18th fairway by what looked like everybody on the property. It was a triumph for organisers. Greg Norman was vindicated. Because LIV Golf had arrived.

Cleary: Medal Day? You need one for turning up
Golf is meant to be fun, right? Well, Medal Day, with the course setup at its hardest and every stroke counted, is not - much more often than not - fun. Indeed it can be like a four-day hike on the Kokoda Track without the sense of accomplishment, according to Matt Cleary.

Cleary: Giving it a Nudgee. The players who brought "It" at Queensland PGA
Nudgee GC was a worthy championship venue and produced a worthy champion. Yet it was the eyes of those gunning for the title that proved the compelling entertainment in the Queensland PGA, according to Matt Cleary.
