COUNTRY CLUB TASMANIA RESORT

Located just 15 minutes’ drive south of Launceston, this Peter Thomson and Mike Wolveridge-designed layout has been at its best in recent years.

Gums and pines line relatively wide fairways, which are punctuated by water hazards and strategically placed bunkers that will challenge even the best players. That said, the forward tees here present a more enjoyable experience for the golfer more skilled on the roulette wheel inside the resort’s casino than making birdies on the course.

RATHO FARM

Ratho is the birthplace of Australian golf. The nation’s oldest course, just a few minutes’ drive from small town of Bothwell, dates back to 1822 when Scot, Alexander Reid, played on Ratho with featheries and clubs brought from the home country.

Three generations of Reids followed in their enjoyment of the links. The great-grandfather of Greg Ramsay purchased Ratho in 1936 and in recent years Ramsay has been working with course designers Neil Crafter and Paul Mogford to restore the course to its true origins.

A round at Ratho is a memorable one not just because of the wonderful holes but it is as if time stood still here. Sheep graze across the fairways and tees, while fences keep them from venturing onto the square-shaped greens found on most holes.

ULVERSTONE GOLF CLUB

Ulverstone is a superb Al Howard design covering undulating land and is renowned for its well-manicured fairways and putting surfaces. The quality of the course is such that it has hosted the Tasmanian Open as well as a host of national amateur championships.

The par-72 is cut from a tall eucalypt forest, which is typical of Tasmania’s north-western region.

The most beautiful offering at Ulverstone is the 158-metre par-3 5th hole where the entire hole is framed by tall gums and the tee shot must be played over a lake to a green tucked in close to the botanical towers.
