Making just his sixth European Tour start after securing a card through Qualifying School last year, Finland’s Sami Valimaki claimed the Oman Open on Sunday. Take a look inside the winning bag of 21-year-old.
WINNING SCORE: 13 under, 275.
EQUIPMENT CHOICE:
DRIVER: TaylorMade SIM with 9˚ loft, fitted with Aldila Xtorsion Green 60 TX shaft.
3-WOOD: TaylorMade SIM Max with 15˚ loft, with Mitsubishi Chemical Tensei AV 75 TX shaft.
IRONS: TaylorMade P790 (2-iron) and TaylorMade P750 (4-iron to pitching wedge), with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts.
WEDGES: TaylorMade MG2 (50˚ and 54˚) and TaylorMade MG Hi-Toe (58˚), with KBS Tour 130 X shafts.
PUTTER: TaylorMade Spider X Copper.
BALL: TaylorMade TP5X.
EQUIPMENT NOTES:
Valimaki’s maiden European Tour win saw his game firing on all cylinders to eventually topple South African Brandon Stone in a play-off. Averaging 335 yards per drive while hitting more than 71 percent of fairways with TaylorMade SIM driver unquestionably gave Valimaki an advantage all week. Designed using unique geometry, SIM drivers have captured two European Tour titles in the desert, Valimaki joining Victorian Lucas Herbert as a first time winner with the model in the bag.
- The most noticeable improvement this week in the Finnish player’s game came on the Greg Norman designed Al Mouj Golf’s greens. Valimaki led the field in Strokes Gained: Putting for the week with his Spider X Copper having been ranked outside the top-160 on the European Tour for Putts per GIR and Putts Avg in season 2020.
- TaylorMade has now claimed back-to-back wins at the Oman Open, Valimaki and Kurt Kitayama both using the company’s five-piece TP5X golf ball to take the trophy in the desert.
QUOTE: “It's awesome. There are not many words to say. It's unbelievable.” – Sami Valimaki.
