The newest player in the professional golf landscape heads back to where much of its news making began earlier this year, with LIV Golf’s penultimate event for 2022 taking place in Saudi Arabia at Royal Greens Golf and Country Club this week.
The circuit fronted by Greg Norman will conclude its individual events here before heading for Florida and the now Donald Trump owned Doral course that once played host to the PGA Tour each year, with many in the field familiar with this week’s venue.
Site of the Saudi International on the then European Tour for a number of years, and this year on the Asian Tour, the course is a happy hunting ground for some of LIV Golf’s 48 players, including former World No.1 Dustin Johnson, and Harold Varner III who won here back in February in dramatic style.
DEFENDING CHAMPION: Inaugural event.
COURSE: Royal Greens Golf and Country Club lies on the edge of the Red Sea and like a number of LIV events so far this year, is not technically in the city for which this week’s tournament is named.
About 100km north of Jeddah, the course has become a familiar one for dedicated watchers of professional golf with once again plays host to the Saudi International this week, with winning scores ranging from 12- to 19-under over its four years of hosting the Saudi International.

Relatively short for a tournament venue in men’s golf, Royal Greens measures 6,410 metres and relies on bunkering and water for much of its challenge, while the frequent winds off the neighbouring Red Sea can cause plenty of havoc for players looking to navigate their way around the layout.
Located in the King Abdullah Economic City on the west coast of Saudi Arabia more than ten hours’ drive from the capital of Riyadh, Royal Greens is the work of European Golf Design with Dave Sampson listed as the lead architect.
Course construction began in 2008 but wasn’t completed until 2017, the facility now under the management of the expansive Troon Golf operation, with exceptional playing surfaces of the hardy Paspalum Dynasty.
PRIZEMONEY: US$25,000,000 ($20 million for the individual event; $5 million to be split among the leading teams)

PLAYERS TO WATCH: When it comes to golf being played in Saudi Arabia, the name Dustin Johnson has to be front of mind.
The American, who won his first LIV event recently in Boston and has been the circuit’s most consistent performer, has won twice at Royal Greens and finished runner-up once in four appearances here.
Announced as the winner of the season long individual player standings this week, Johnson was T15 last week in Bangkok, but one could expect a better showing this week around a course he clearly enjoys.

A winner here at the start of the year Harrold Varner is a near certainty to be in the mix as he arrives off the back of share of sixth in Thailand last week.
Varner is a streaky player who has a habit of making birdies in bunches and will be full of good memories from February when he dropped a long putt on the last to claim the biggest win of his career.
Cam Smith is always worth watching every time he tees it up but it will particularly interesting to see how he bounces back here after his worst showing in his brief LIV career last week.
Finishing in a share of 41st in Bangkok, the Queenslander failed to break 70 in the three rounds, but having spent time with coach Grant Field in Thailand, one would expect a better showing from the World No.2.
The story of last week on the burgeoning circuit was Eugenio Chacarra who showed just what he is capable of by winning in impressive fashion.
The Spaniard former amateur start owns a game that should suit this venue perfectly and confidence is obviously of no concern.
There were also positive signs for some major champions last week in Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed who all have experience here and would be keen to make it seven winners from seven events in LIV Golf’s first season.
AUSTRALIANS IN THE FIELD: Cam Smith, Marc Leishman, Matt Jones, Jed Morgan and Wade Ormsby
COVERAGE: Beginning Friday local time, coverage will be available via the LIV Golf website, YouTube and Facebook channels.
