Now in its fifth year and second at Lake Nona in Florida, the field is made up of tournament winners from the past two seasons, plus a collection of some of America’s best known sports and entertainment types.

The qualification criteria is for winners from the past two season to fill the 30 players spots and while some of the game’s biggest names have opted out in 2023 many more have chosen to play.

DEFENDING CHAMPION: Danielle Kang put the heartbreak of a runner-up finish in 2021 behind her in the most dramatic fashion possible by winning in style in 2022.

A final round of four-under 68 was good enough to hold off Brooke Henderson and 2020 winner Gaby Lopez.

The three shot win was the last of her six Tour victories to date and she would love nothing more than to back up and grab number seven.

COURSE: Lake Nona might be one of the “golfiest” golf clubs in the world in terms of professional members.

The club counts dozens of PGA Tour and LPGA players among its membership, including Annika Sorenstam.

Quintessentially Florida in design and presentation, it is a course that sets up well for professional tournament play.

It asks the sorts of questions professional golfers like to answer but separates the best from the rest by testing execution more than imagination.

Playing to just on 6,000 metres and a par of 72 for this week’s event, there will be plenty to challenge the field though there are no shortage of birdie opportunities as well.

The winning score tends to be in that professional golf sweet spot of double digits under par and usually edging closer to 20-under than 10-under.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Nelly Korda leads the way this week in terms of world rankings and she will fancy her chances given the venue and field.

In fact, the story of the week is as much about who isn’t teeing up as who is with several top-10 ranked players opting to skip the tournament.

No.1 Lydia Ko heads that list which also includes world numbers three, four, five and six in Minjee Lee, Attaya Thitikul, Jin Young Ko and Lexi Thompson.

However, what the field lacks in outright star power it makes up for in promising new talent including Solheim Cup foes Jennifer Kupcho and Leona Maguire.

Defending champion Danielle Kang showed a liking for the Lake Nona course last year and given she is winless since then she won’t be short on motivation.

Kang is aggressive in both her style of play and attitude on the course and that could pay dividends this week in a field of golfers who’ve spent less time at the top of the leaderboard.

However, Korda is not one of those and is among the favourites whenever she tees up.

She was T4 here last year so likes the course but also has two third place finishes suggesting she also likes the time of year.

Korda shares the course record here of 66 which she produced in the second round last year.

72-HOLE RECORD (Lake Nona): 272 (-16, Danielle Kang, 2022)

18-HOLE RECORD (Lake Nona): 66 (Nelly Korda, 2022)

PAST AUSSIE WINNERS: No Australian has won this event.

AUSTRALIANS IN THE FIELD: None.
