The LPGA Tour season kicks off this week with the limited field Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions in Florida. Debuting in 2019, the event contested by the previous year’s winners also features a celebrity pro-am component.
DEFENDING CHAMPION: South Korean Eun-Hee Ji defeated compatriot Mirim Lee by two shots in the inaugural event last year.
COURSE: Designed by Tom Fazio, Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club Orlando’s Tranquilo Golf Course welcomes the top LPGA Tour players of 2019 this week. A certified bird sanctuary, the par-72 will play to 6,645 yards this week.
PRIZEMONEY: US$1,200,000.
PLAYERS TO WATCH …
Third in this event last year, Nelly Korda must be considered among the big chances this week with some of the biggest names in women’s golf missing. The rising star finished 2019 with a win and T3 from her last two events and will be raring to go as she prepares to defend her Women’s Australian Open crown at Royal Adelaide in a few weeks. The Florida resident will also feel right at home on this layout.
Local product Lexi Thompson had a very up and down year in 2019 but can always be expected to play well at home. Thompson will be hoping to regain her mantle as the top American player on the LPGA Tour in 2020 and can be expected to come at firing at an event where she was 10th last year. Among the longest hitters in the women’s game, Thompson will see the length of this course as no obstacle this week, while the anticipated slightly easier setup to accommodate the amateurs from the pro-am part of the event should suit a player known for making plenty of birdies.
72-HOLE RECORD: Eun-Hee Ji took 270 shots (14-under) on her way to winning the debut of this event in 2019.
PAST AUSSIE WINNERS: No previous Australian winners.
AUSTRALIANS IN THE FIELD: There are no Australians in the field this week, with last year’s winners Hannah Green and Minjee Lee choosing to skip the event.
