The field for this year’s Australian PGA Championship has received a huge boost with Chile’s Joaquin Niemann signing on for the November 27-30 tournament at Royal Queensland Golf Club in Brisbane.
The winner of the 20 professional events worldwide, including two on the PGA Tour and seven on LIV Golf, Niemann will be looking to complete the Australian majors double after claiming the Australian Open in 2023.
With his 2025 campaign so far featuring five victories, including LIV Adelaide, Niemann will be one of the favourites to win the Kirkwood Cup.
In his last appearance at Royal Queensland in 2023, Niemann created headlines with a hole-in-one on the 160m fourth hole in the final round, eventually finishing in fifth place.
The Chilean, who will also play in the Australian Open, will be joined at Royal Queensland by two of his Torque teammates, Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz and Columbia’s Sebastian Munoz.
“Playing two weeks in Australia will be a great way to end the year,” Niemann said.
“It’s a fantastic place to play golf.
“I have great memories from playing in Australia over the years, especially after winning the Australian Open in 2023.
“The support I’ve had from Aussie fans has been awesome, so I can’t wait to get back and compete again.
“The Australian PGA Championship has such a strong history and reputation. To have my name on that trophy one day would be something really special.”
Niemann’s involvement adds considerable strength to what is shaping up to be a stellar field for this year’s PGA, joining the likes of Adam Scott, Cam Smith, Ryan Fox, Min Woo Lee, Cam Davis, Marc Leishman and defending champion Elvis Smylie.
The allocation of international players from the DP World Tour will be announced in coming weeks.
“A truly international field is one of hallmarks of the BMW Australian PGA Championship and this year is shaping to be one of our most diverse fields in recent years,” PGA of Australia CEO Gavin Kirkman said.
“We’re delighted that Joaquin, one of the best players under 30 in world golf, has added our championship in Brisbane to the Australian Open in Melbourne.
“He is a renowned for his elite ball-striking and should be a major contender for the Kirkwood Cup.”
