South Korea’s Mirim Lee has held off a strong field to win the Kia Classic and enter the winner’s circle for the first time since 2014.
Lee’s last tour victory came at the Reignwood LPGA Classic three years ago, but the World No.21 looked a class above in California, claiming a six-shot victory over compatriot So Yeon Ryu and American Austin Ernst.
History looked to be repeating itself in Carlsbad as Lee entered the final round with the 54-hole lead, but unlike 2015 – when she succumbed to a charging Christie Kerr – the South Korean ran away with the tournament after firing a seven under 65.
“I think I was hitting it a little better than two years ago,” Lee said.
South Korean golfers have now claimed four of the last five events on the LPGA Tour, and takes ownership to six of the world’s top-10 ranked players. While it’s World No.189 – Shi-Hyun Ahn – shot a course-record nine under 63 in her final round.
Runner-up So Yeon Ryu attributed her nation’s success to the way it raises its players.
“Golf is a patience game, so when you’re playing golf, I think our culture definitely can help to handle your mind really well on the golf course,” Ryu said.
Queensland’s Sarah Jane Smith, who finished in a tie for 21st, was Australia’s best player.
