Kiwi great Lydia Ko fired a scintillating 7-under 64 to earn her first major championship top 10 in almost two years on an extraordinary final day at The Amundi Evian Championship in France.
On the back of her record-setting 11-under 60 in Round 3, Haeran Ryu was expected to cruise to a second straight major championship yet was taken to a playoff by a fast-finishing Brooke Henderson.
In an astonishing stretch, Henderson followed an eagle at the par-5 seventh with a hole-in-one at the par-3 eighth to turn the tournament on its head.
Ryu, on the other hand, couldn’t buy a birdie until the 72nd hole, a birdie she would need as Henderson made her third eagle of the round at 18 to shoot 7-under 64 and finish at 19-under.
Ryu would add to her KPMG Women’s PGA Championship with a birdie at the first playoff hole as Ko recorded her 19th major championship top 10.
Eleven years since her maiden major victory at Evian Resort Golf Club, Ko’s tie for seventh is her best result in golf’s showpiece events since her emotional AIG Women’s Open triumph in 2024.
Making the week even more memorable was having her husband, Jun Chung, sub in as caddie for the week.
“He was A+ for I think me personally. Would it be an A+ for other players? I’m not really sure,” Ko joked.
“But obviously he can say some things that only a husband can say.
“When I started off the championship with a bogey on the first and he was like, ‘Hey, it’s OK. You can do this.’
“Just having him on the bag, like he felt like he was carrying his clubs and like playing on the weekend, and honestly felt like for me, too, like any other day we play together on the weekend.
“We had a lot of fun. I think having him on the bag has made me realize like how tough of a job a caddie really is.”
Queenslanders Karis Davidson (71) and Cassie Porter (69) were the only two Aussies to play all four rounds at Evian.
Chasing a first major top 10, Davidson was 4-under through 10 holes of her final round but dropped four shots in the space of four holes late to end the week in a share of 26th at 6-under.
Porter also finished her week at 6-under, the highlight of her final round an eagle at the par-5 ninth.
