The well established tussle between Karrie Webb and Annika Sorenstam has shifted from the regular LPGA Tour to the Legends Tour, with the Aussie emerging victorious in her first Senior Major on Sunday over her long time rival.
Entering the final day with a two shot lead, Webb admitted that she had become a little unfamiliar with the pressures that come with contending for a tournament having wound down her schedule in recent years and last winning a professional tournament in 2014.
“I’m not used to playing golf with adrenaline,” Webb said. “It was hard to know how far I was hitting it, so it was a bit of a guessing game, but I think I did pretty good overall with it.”
Despite not being used to the feelings, the Queenslander did just fine relying on her Hall of Fame experience during the third round at Salina Country Club in Kansas.
Sorenstam chipped in for eagle at the 1st hole, an occurance Webb called “a game on moment”, with 47-year-old Webb responding with a three-under front nine including four birdies offset by a lone bogey at the par-4 6th.

But the Swede wasn’t going away. Three birdies in addition to the chip-in seeing her make the turn for home at five-under on the day and in a share of the lead at 12-under-par.
Sorenstam’s hot run ended there however, with bogeys at the 15th and 17th the only interruption to an all par back nine affair as Webb took control.
“I wish I would have continued that pressure that I started on,” Sorenstam reflected of the back nine. “It would have been fun, but I think I ran out of gas a little bit.”
A Webb birdie at the par-4 10th followed by another at the 12th then by an eagle of her own at the par-5 14th – sandwiched between two bogeys – saw the seven-time major winner sign for a five-under round of 67 and 14-under total to defeat Sorenstam by two shots.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve had to make putts down the stretch to win a golf tournament,” Webb concluded after the round.' “So the mouth was getting dry and the little putts were seeming a little bit longer.”
