The new wedges are made from 8620 carbon steel and feature a unique “four-port aluminium medallion weighting system” which allows the company’s engineers to optimally and progressively place the centre of gravity (CG) in each individual loft. Delivering specialist performance from wedge to wedge.

According to Callaway, the MD4’s two finishes, Platinum Chrome and Matte Black, and 21 loft-bounce combinations make the new line the “most comprehensive Callaway wedge line ever”. With a new X-Grind added to the existing C, S and W sole grinds to cater for a wider variety of attack angles and course conditions and lofts ranging from 46˚-64˚.

Spin is the primary performance characteristic in wedges and the Mack Daddy 4 is no different. 16 horizontally milled and saw-cut grooves are found on each wedge face, with the addition of a new ‘Nip-It’ groove low on the face near the leading edge, offering added control.

Like the CG the grooves have been specifically designed for each wedge’s key function, with lofts 52˚ and below featuring 20D grooves, which deliver better full shot performance, while from 54˚ and above a more aggressive 5D groove is designed for improved performance around the green and from the rough.

To improve the MD4’s spin and control even further Callaway milled what it calls a “Micro-Positive surface texture” on the face between each groove that incorporates micro ridges and grooves to further enhance the wedge’s ability to grab the cover of the ball, increasing spin even more. Giving the MD4 grooves within its grooves. All of which delivers 84 contact points on each wedge face to grab the golf ball and impart spin.

Cleveland is renowned for his work shaping the tools of the world’s best players and the shape, size and sole of the MD4 is the result of this work and feedback from the Tour.

Compared to the previous MD3 the new model incorporates a slightly more compact shape that is noticeable at address and a straighter leading and refined sole that improves playability from a variety of lies.

“MD4 sets a new and higher standard in performance and appearance. Shape, feel, spin, control, versatility, finish and detailing have all been elevated to the highest level we’ve ever achieved,” Cleveland said.
