Australian Kelsey Bennett has continued her breakout Ladies European Tour season with another superb performance at the Lalla Meryem Cup, pushing teenage sensation Anna Huang all the way before finishing runner-up in Morocco.
Bennett took a share of the spotlight after producing a brilliant third-round 65 (-8) to charge into the final day lead, before Huang closed with a stunning 66 (-7) to claim victory and set a new LET record as the youngest player in history to reach three wins on the circuit.
The Queenslander’s runner-up finish adds to an already impressive campaign which includes her maiden LET victory at the Australian Women’s Classic at Magenta Shores in March. Bennett now sits firmly among the tour’s leading performers, currently fourth on the Order of Merit.
Canadian Huang’s win was her third LET title following back-to-back victories in September at the La Sella Open and Lacoste Ladies Open de France.
At just 17 years, 6 months and 24 days old, Huang bettered the previous record held by former World No 1 Lydia Ko. The Kiwi won the New Zealand Women’s Open in 2013 and 2015, as well as the Women’s Australian Open in 2015 – all three by the age of 17 years, 10 months and 7 days.
Huang also surpasses another former World No 1, Jeeno Thitikul, in reaching a hat-trick of wins at a younger age. The Thai star won the Ladies European Thailand Championship in 2017 and 2019, plus the VP Bank Swiss Ladies Open by the age of 18 years, 4 months and 7 days.
Bennett’s third-round surge proved one of the highlights of the week. Just like in round one, the 26-year-old was off to a flying start, birdying three of her first four holes at the 10th, 12th and 13th, before adding another at the 15th to turn in 32 and open up a buffer over the field.
