Tickets to the Presidents Cup are on sale and some fans are not happy at the cost. BRENDAN JAMES looks at the real value of a Cup ticket.
A ticket to the Presidents Cup, to be played at Royal Melbourne in November, is one of the hottest in the history of Australian golf. Already, 6,000 individual tickets have been sold through travel packages and corporate interest is at fever pitch. Is it any wonder then that such a high premium has been placed on the tickets being sold to the general public?
The general admission ticket prices start from as low as $60 for adults to attend a practice day to $130 to attend the final day's play. A weekly adult ticket, covering two practice rounds and the four days of competition, costs $475. (For a full list of adult, concession, family and reserved seating ticket prices visit www.presidentscup.com)
Is a ticket to watch 24 of the world's best players really worth that much money?
Using the $130 general admission price for the final day's play as a yard stick, lets see how it compares to other golf and sporting events.
2011 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP (Final round, Royal St Georges) A$87 (£55)
2011 US OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP (Final round, Congressional) A$120 (US$125)
2011 AUSTRALIAN OPEN TENNIS (Men's final) A$339
2011 AUSTRALIAN FORMULA ONE GRAND PRIX (race day) A$110
2011 STATE OF ORIGIN RUGBY LEAGUE (Game 1, Brisbane) A$125
2010 RYDER CUP (Final round, Celtic Manor) A$205 (£130)
2010 AUSTRALIAN OPEN GOLF (Final round, The Lakes) A$30
2010 AFL GRAND FINAL (standard seat) A$161
As you can see the day ticket to the final day of the Presidents Cup compares more than favourably with other events. In fact, when you consider the final of the men's Australian Open tennis could be over in two hours, I know I'd rather spend my cash on a full day out.
What do you think? Is the cost of Presidents Cup tickets prohibitive, especially the weekly and family ticket options? Let us know your thoughts.
