Tiger Woods and I both started playing golf at a young age. We also share the fact that our professional lives are built around golf.
On the surface, that is about where the similarities end with the 15-time major champion. (For reference this writer has zero of those trophies on the mantlepiece.)
Yet, Woods revealed a little something to remind us all that at the core we are all golfers and we share more than you realise with those players that will walk the property at Augusta National inside the ropes this week.
During his Tuesday press conference, Tiger revealed this nugget when talking golf ball rollback: “Last week, I was at home playing at Medalist and I had my old Persimmon driver and I was able to still carry the ball 290 yards. Now, when I missed it, no, it did not go very far. But the ability to hit the ball in the middle of the face was rewarded.”
This is a man preparing for one of the biggest tournaments in the world to be played this year, who rather than only use the gear he will have in play, instead pulled an old wooden block out of the garage to have some fun.
Woods went a step further, bringing some of his retro gear on board the private jet to Augusta to show his friends.

“I don't know if Rory shared this, but yesterday I brought a couple balata balls up here with me and threw them over to him and had him hit a couple putts with them, and he said, ‘Oh, my God’,” Woods added.
The personal connection to Tiger has never been so real. Actually playing golf these days is rare, with the exception being ‘Gala Days’ played alongside former Tour player turned commentator Ewan Porter, Adrian Logue and golf clothier Matt Burns of Angus & Grace Go Golfing that create genuine internal excitement. There's also beer, that helps.
On these days, the motley foursome head off to public courses armed with retro clubs, with Porter filling the Tiger role of providing the balata golf balls. He also happens to play to a level unmatched by the rest of the crew, the Tiger Woods of Sydney Gala Days you might say.
In complete honesty, I’ve never had so much fun playing golf.
It sounds like Tiger has that similar golf equipment nerdery he can’t escape, even when laser focused on The Masters.
Adam Scott is similiar, with the 2013 Masters champion owning a couple of old persimmons in the cupboard that get the occasional run.
There is so much about Masters week that is the stuff of never to be realised dreams for us mere mortals, yet Tiger’s retro gear and even Scott and Cam Smith being pictured talking clubs is reminder that all of us golfers are a lot more alike than we sometimes think.
And if Tiger is really getting the retro bug, the next Gala Day is currently being planned and I am sure we can make some room in the group. Adam too if it fits his schedule.
