Remembering the inaugural Champion Golfer of the Year, Willie Park Snr – a former caddie and clubmaker, who overcame the legendary Old Tom Morris to win the Open belt.
What started as a challenge match organised by a handful of gentlemen in Prestwick, Scotland, has grown into one of the great sporting events in the world.
The year was 1860 and Prestwick's keeper of the green Old Tom Morris was the favourite to win this inaugural match to establish who would be the Champion Golfer of the Year. But it was a former caddie and clubmaker, Willie Park Snr, who would claim the inaugural Open belt.
