EQUIPMENT NOTES:

  • Burns' bag makes for an interesting study in that it is quite unlike a lot of other Tour players for a number of reasons. The first standout is that the American goes from driver to 4-wood, the reason a fairly simple one, it fits the gaps in his setup and ball flight needs. The head is turned down in loft, while the shaft difference in bend profile is to ensure a better strike once the shaft has been tipped for fit a fairway wood. Burn's hybrid took sometime to get right with Callaway when switching from an older model, but is now his favourite in the bag according to his team.

  • Another area the 25-year-old differs from a number of his fellow top pros is with his wedge setup. Firstly, Burns carries a matching AW or Approach Wedge to his iron set, having previously used speciality wedges in both his pitching and gap wedges. According to Callaway it is for a fairly simple reason, Burns considers it a full shot club and the Apex TCB (Tour Cavity Back) is an easier to hit club and fits his yardage gaps well. The former LSU star also uses a lob wedge with a lot of bounce (20° effective in some parts of the sole) and again it is without much further analysis than he likes to play with more bounce than most and can dig wedges a little.

  • The Apex TCB irons he uses are an extremely popular model on Tour with players like Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele and Burns wields them expertly. A magnificent ball striker, the now four-time PGA Tour winner ranked T9 for greens in regulation around the tricky Colonial Country Club this week and understandably sticks with his trusty older model Odyssey putter as one of the most consistent putters on the PGA Tour.

  • Burns' win makes it four PGA Tour victories for Callaway's Chrome Soft range of golf balls so far this season.

QUOTE: "It felt like somewhat of a major championship type conditions where you're just going to have those stretches where it's really hard. But the way that we were able to just get the ball in position and get it around here in five-under par today I thought was a really good score.” – Sam Burns.
