Dustin Johnson continued his love affair with Royal Greens Golf and Country Club and the Saudi International on Sunday. The World No.1 winning for the second time in three years at the venue having finished runner-up last year. Here’s what he had in the bag.
WINNING SCORE: 15-under-par, 265.
EQUIPMENT CHOICE:
DRIVER: TaylorMade SIM with 10.5˚ loft, fitted with Fujikura Speeder 661 X shaft.
3 WOOD: TaylorMade SIM2 Titanium with 15˚ loft, with Fujikura Ventus Black 8X shaft.
7 WOOD: TaylorMade SIM Max with 21˚ loft, with Project X HZRDUS Black 95 6.5 shaft.
IRONS: TaylorMade P730 DJ Proto (3-iron to pitching wedge), with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts.
WEDGES: TaylorMade MG (52˚ & 60˚-10˚), with KBS Tour Custom Black 120 S shafts.
PUTTER: TaylorMade Spider Limited Itsy Bitsy.
BALL: TaylorMade TP5X.
EQUIPMENT NOTES:
Having started the year in Hawaii with TaylorMade’s new SIM2 driver, Johnson returned to his SIM driver he had so much success with as he ventured to the European Tour and the Saudi International, a tournament he is now a combined 44-under over three years. Ranking third for Strokes Gained: Driving for the week, Johnson’s driver is fitted with the same Fujikura Speeder 661 shaft he has used for the majority of his career.
-
Johnson continues to carry a SIM Max 7-wood that made its way into his bag in the lead-up to his success at Augusta National in November last year. Uniquely, ‘DJ’ carries the 7-wood with 21˚ of loft as well as a 3-iron carrying a similar loft. Despite this, the added length of the 7-wood plus the variance in head designs would create a distance variance, as well as the likelihood that the 7-wood has been delofted.
-
Johnson, who defeated Justin Rose and Tony Finau by two shots with his final round 68, gives TaylorMade’s TP5 range of golf balls its first victory on the European Tour for 2021, while his win and Brooks Koepka’s victory in Scottsdale give TaylorMade drivers a double win weekend.
QUOTE: “I like to play well every week, so yeah, I approach every tournament the same. I don't try to get my game just ready for the majors. I want to be ready each and every week I play.” – Dustin Johnson.
