After eight top-10s on the LPGA Tour and being in contention at last weeks Saudi Ladies International, American Lilia Vu has broken through for her first LPGA win at the Honda LPGA Thailand.
Going out with a mindset to birdie every hole in a mission to chase down local 54-hole leader Natthakritta Vongtaveelap, Vu got off to a great start with two birdies in the opening three holes.
“My dad was telling me one good round tomorrow and I could win. That's all I kept thinking about,” Vu said.
“And basically today I basically just blacked out and tried to birdie every single hole. If I didn't, just move on and try again.”
Meanwhile, the Thai rookie mixed bogeys and a double bogey with her birdies over the front nine, which she covered in 37 shots to Vu’s 32.
Making two birdies to close the front nine on Sunday, 25-year-old Vu added three more birdies on the trot to start the inward half at Siam Country Club’s Pattaya Old Course to reach 21-under and a one shot lead over Vongtaveelap.
Vongtaveelap found her seventh birdie of the day at the 14th hole to draw level, but another birdie came for Vu at the par-4 15th from where she parred in to sign for a bogey free 64 and 22-under total. Her score good enough for a one shot win over Vongtaveelap.
“Got into the scoring tent and didn't know what I shot,” Vu said. “I just knew I made a lot of birdies and I was going to try my best, and that's happened.”
World No.4 Atthaya Thitikul closed with a 68 to finish two back of Vu in third alone, while Jin Young Ko matched the winner’s 64 on Sunday to share sixth with Lydia Ko, Nelly Korda and Leona Maguire.
Hannah Green was the best of the Australian pair after finding her best on the final day when she shot 69 to finish T44 at seven-under, while it was a week to forget for Minjee Lee in her return to competitive action. The two-time major winner failing to break 70 for the week and finishing at even par in 67th.
