Dozens of firefighters have battled for several hours this afternoon to extinguish a blaze that has destroyed the clubhouse at The Eastern Golf Club in Victoria’s Yarra Valley.
Towering plumes of thick black smoke were visible for nearly 10km in every direction as the fire ripped through the multi-million clubhouse beside the Greg Norman-designed course, at Yering.
Emergency services were called to the club about 1.45pm and they arrived to find nearly 30 people had been safely evacuated.
The area of the building that was the pro shop collapsed at the height of the blaze, while other parts of the clubhouse has been reduced to smouldering wreckage and twisted metal.
Country Fire Authority chief fire officer David Renkin told ABC News it took firefighters almost two hours to gain control of the fire.
"It's a total loss. The fire has extended from where we believe the fire started," he said.
"Unfortunately, due to the wind conditions today it's pushed the fire through the whole building."

The cause of the fire is unknown.

The $70 million Eastern Golf Club, including 27-hole Greg Norman-designed course, opened for play in 2015. Its South Course was ranked No.54 in Golf Australia magazine’s Top-100 Courses for 2022.
