PGA TOUR OF AUSTRALASIA – WA OPEN

Brendan James – Golf Australia Editor

Not surprising to see a strong local presence in the West this week and I’m tipping one of the home players to get the job done. JARRYD FELTON finished back in the pack in this event earlier this year but showed some terrific form in the desert last week.

His closing 75 in Kalgoorlie would have left a bitter taste in his mouth after surging into the lead through three rounds.

The Western Australian course will be familiar to Felton and I expect he can go on with the show this week.

Went supremely close with Jarryd Felton last week, and while the temptation is there to go again I am going to follow the work of Rod Morri and listen to Ewan Porter's crowing about JEFFREY GUAN.

Guan is something special and he showed that last week. This event's history, especially recently, is packed full of amateur winners and I see no reason the Sydneysider can't join them.

He did enough last week for me to stick with him this week so mark me down for a JEFFREY GUAN victory.

Couldn’t quite keep pace in Kalgoorlie over the weekend but a T9 result — and the crucial experience that comes with it —has only moved him a step closer to winning.

Ewan Porter declared on Twitter during the week that he is convinced Guan will capture a professional event this summer and I concur.

I’m currently out of the tipping office and will not be spending any time looking up nuances of prognostication, comedy or Emanuel appeasement to interrupt my golf trip.

So I’m tipping all in one sentence to really annoy Jimmy’s formatting.

No interest in US PGA, BRETT COLETTA to strike in WA, MINJEE LEE to do the LPGA thing, SEBASTIAN GARCIA GROUT in Mallorca and me to run a mentally crippling second on my boys’ trip.

See you all next week.

PGA TOUR – THE CJ CUP

I watched CAMERON YOUNG up close at The Open back in July and couldn’t be more impressed with the way he plays the game.

He started his 2022-23 campaign OK in Japan but with the rust now blown off, he’ll be the player to watch this week in South Carolina.

RORY MCILROY is being offered at a similar price to the one you would get if you framed a market on the chances of getting a stray shot my way from our semi-absentee tipster Mark Hayes each week.

There is good reason, and I think Rory will prove he deserves the almost Tiger-like odds this week as he returns to the top of the world rankings before they lose complete meaning in the ongoing LIV/PGA Tour battle.

The big guns are back out for this week’s event in South Carolina and logic says the top of the world rankings is the place to look.

However, it’s a bit further down I think the value bet for the week is with SAHITH THEEGALA showing again last week in Japan that it is a question of if not when he will win. I say it will be this week.

LPGA TOUR – BMW LADIES CHAMPIONSHP

Brendan James – Golf Australia Editor

World No.1 JIN YOUNG KO hasn’t played on the LPGA since the end of August, having missed two cuts on the trot. But she’s back this week and defending the title she won in a play-off last year after shooting a final round 64.

It has been seven months since her last victory and by my reckoning that’s way too long for a player of Ko’s incredible ability.

I need to jump off the Lydia Ko bandwagon to give the Kiwi a chance to actually win again. So Lydia, now is your chance.

Given I am overlooking the likely winner, let's search for a bit of value in the form of STEPH KYRIACOU.

It feels like the Aussie is on the brink of stringing four rounds together on the LPGA and contending till the finish and why not this week?

The obvious choice in South Korea is the World No.1, hometown favourite and defending champion Jin Young Ko but given she is retiring from a two month break for a wrist injury I’ll be sticking with my commitment of a couple of weeks ago to pick LYDIA KO whenever she is in the field, which she is this week.

So, Lydia Ko it is.

DP WORLD TOUR – MALLORCA GOLF OPEN

Brendan James – Golf Australia Editor

Denmark’s RASMUS HOJGAARD is playing some pretty good golf at the moment and he’s fast approaching a win.

He finished fifth at Valderrama last week and was runner-up in Paris last month, which all suggests he’s got some good form heading to Mallorca.

And if you’re after any more evidence … he’s 43-under for his past five starts on the DP World Tour.

JASON SCRIVENER will win one of these days on the DP World Tour and finally produce a result I thought was around the corner after watching him win the NSW Open at Twin Creeks many moons ago.

The West Australian is a supreme ball striker that should help on an unfamiliar venue here.

Winning back-to-back is no easy feat but neither is shooting 19-under-par around Valderrama, especially when you are apparently considered prison non grata by the host Tour and TV coverage because of a legal dispute.

For both those reasons mark down ADRIAN OTAEGUI for victory number two in as many weeks.
