PGA TOUR OF AUSTRALASIA – AUSTRALIAN OPEN

Brendan James – Golf Australia Editor

WINNER: Does CAM SMITH have enough juice left in the tank to go 72 more holes and win his first Stonehaven Cup?

Probably … especially if he’s anywhere near the lead come Sunday.

Sportsbet odds: $3.50

OUTSIDER: The golfing world will be expecting Cam Smith to end his incredible 2022 with a victory but it has been a long time since he played both courses hosting this week.

Not so for the greatest ambassador for Melbourne Sandbelt golf, GEOFF OGILVY. Yes, his very best golf is in the rear vision mirror but his final round 65 at the Australian PGA proved he still has plenty of game … experience counts for plenty as does a renewed passion for the professional game.

Sportsbet odds: $176

JIMMY EMANUEL – Golf Australia Deputy & Digital Editor

I’ll leave the Cam Smith tipping to those without a sense of adventure … to give you an idea of who that is, Messrs James and Hayes have bemoaned this week that their favourite Sandbelt pizza joint has gone “all trendy” so they can’t indulge the same topping they do every tournament week here.

This is my genuine pick, but doubles as an outsider based purely on the price which I think the bookies will live to regret.

I walked nine holes with GEOFF OGILVY on Tuesday and it was a ball striking clinic! He shot the equal low round of the day on Sunday at RQ and if the Sandbelt were a person, it would be him.

The other sure sign that Ogilvy is close to a good result … he was furious when one or two holes got away from him last week. That means he cares, and although not having the miles in the legs, he just needs the putter to get hot for a second Stonehaven Cup.

Sportsbet odds: $176

OUTSIDER: He might not grab the trophy, but he is a big chance to be top Kiwi and somewhere near the top come Sunday.

DENZEL IEREMIA hits the ball a mile but is far from one dimensional.

Showed some good signs last week and is a genuine good guy.

Sportsbet odds: $111

WINNER: It would be easy (and sensible) to pick the man of the moment to back up again this week. So well is Cam Smith playing at the moment that even has bad golf is good. However, it’s boring tipping favourites so let’s look a little further afield (without wandering into outsider territory) and select LUCAS HERBERT.

A winner on the world’s two biggest Tours, Victorian born and bred and would love nothing more than to steal the limelight from Smith. Withdrawing from last week’s PGA at Royal Queensland with a niggling back issue is a slight concern but he wouldn’t be here this week if he didn't thinks could win and assuming the injury doesn’t flare up he’ll be there at the end.

Sportsbet odds: $23

OUTSIDER: One of the great things about being at a golf tournament in person again is the inside info you can get on the players such as the 10 minute dissertation I was privileged to hear from Mike Clayton about his boss for the week, ELVIS SMYLIE.

Clayton is not one to gild the lily and he is effusive in his praise of the Queenslander’s talent and had no hesitation in confirming he believes Smylie is a legitimate chance this week. Not for the first time I will note that if it is good enough for Clayton then it’s good enough for me.

Sportsbet odds: $201

Mark Hayes – Man About Golf

WINNER: Why would I tip anything else than the CAM SMITH double?

I have walked along the range this morning and seen about 20 outstanding swings that have tempted me.

But then I come to the realisation that none of them has the mighty mullet’s short game.

The very first time I saw Smith play was at Kingston Heath maybe a dozen years back, and I thought then that there were very few wedge games better suited than his to the Sandbelt.

He’s come close in Sydney a few times, but this is right in Smith’s wheelhouse.

Sportsbet odds: $3.50

OUTSIDER: I don’t think HARRISON ENDYCOTT deserves to be an “outsider”, for the record. But given he was literally on the outside of this tournament only a few weeks ago, our newest PGA Tour member deserves some hype.

Endycott goes well in Victoria, must surely have a chip on his shoulder and, just quietly, is bloody determined in the least competitive of situations, let alone his national championship.

Would love to see Harro salute here. Would be an epic story.

Sportsbet odds: $61

WPGA TOUR OF AUSTRALASIA – AUSTRALIAN OPEN

Brendan James – Golf Australia Editor

WINNER: One of the first international players to seek an invite into the field this week was Korea’s SO YEON RYU, the two-time major champion who has 21 professional wins to her credit and was World No.1 just five years ago.

She has limited experience on the Sandbelt but what she has seen she’s loved. She’s hard to discount here.

Sportsbet odds: $17

OUTSIDER: Hard to imagine ever tipping KARRIE WEBB as an outsider but here we are.

Could she fulfil a fairytale sixth Women’s Australian Open win? I think she can, if the putter and short game is sharp enough.

She’s the only player, man or woman, competing this week that has won at both courses and the firm, fast running conditions will certainly play into her hands. If Karrie can get to seven or eight under through 54 holes, she will be in the hunt for the final round.

Sportsbet odds: $81

JIMMY EMANUEL – Golf Australia Deputy & Digital Editor

WINNER: The focus will be on some of the bigger names but the Patricia Bridges Bowl is going to GRACE KIM.

Now a card carrying member of the LPGA Tour, Grace showed her Sandbelt wares at the Sandbelt Invitational last year when she was low woman. I’ve also never seen her miss a fairway in all the tournaments I have covered with Kim in the field.

That skill will work to her advantage around the Sandbelt and with the shorter course this week based on the field depth, Kim won’t give up as much to some of the power players from the US.

Sportsbet odds: $41

OUTSIDER: There are a lot of players in this field for whom the Sandbelt will be a whole new animal and you can likely discount them, especially over the weekend when the wind gets up.

So I am going local, very local in fact. STEPH BUNQUE is a member of Victoria, or at least that is what my researchers at The Emanuel Tipping Company Pty Ltd tell me.

That, plus some real power off the tee will see plenty of birdie looks.

Like my men’s outsider, she gets the good people nod here.

Sportsbet odds: $101

WINNER: If you’re wondering about the talent level teeing up this week in the Women’s Australian Open consider three of the five 2022 major champions are in the field. While it would be no surprise if the winner came from the group of Minjee Lee, Ashleigh Buhai or Jennifer Kupcho, there is another player who wants this title at least as much (and likely more) than almost any other.

That player is HANNAH GREEN and the West Australian will have my money on her this week. (Or at least she would, if I was one to bet, which I’m not).

Sportsbet odds: $4.50

OUTSIDER: There’s a load of young and emerging talent at Victoria and Kingston Heath this week but it is to the other end of the experience scale I am looking for an outsider. There is a generation of golf fans who would find the name ‘KARRIE WEBB’ and Outsider’ being used in the same sentence bewildering yet that is the reality this week.

However, that is very different to saying she can’t win. The nature of the golf courses is perfect for a player of Webb’s calibre and not an awful lot would have to go right for her to get in the mix. And if she can get in the mix, anything can happen. Let’s hope it does.

Sportsbet odds: $81

Mark Hayes – Man About Golf

WINNER: I’ve tipped her approximately 20 times this year, so again, I can’t get away from MINJEE LEE in what is our grand final. (Surely, this is our grand final, right, Jimmy???)

Another interstater who’s at home on the Sandbelt as she is in WA and listening to her speak in her pre-tournament presser, you can tell this has been on her mind for quite a while.

The recipe for success at Victoria, in particular, is to attack pins from the best quadrant of the fairways and there’s no more laser driver than our Minjee.

A US/Aussie Open double – what a way to end an incredible 2022.

Sportsbet odds: $4.50

OUTSIDER: GABI RUFFELS, the forgotten woman of Australian golf, could win this at her best. We just haven’t seen her enough this year to know how far off that might be.

On her home course and with a chance to show off the game that has taken her so far in the US, Ruffels will use her incredible power and timing to great effect on the course on which she learnt the trade.

It will be very exciting to see her week unfold.

DP WORLD TOUR – SOUTH AFRICAN OPEN

Brendan James – Golf Australia Editor

Former Masters Champion CHARL SCHWARTZEL is lining up for his 17th tilt at the South African Open title, which he would desperately like to win for the first time.

Yes, that’s right, he’s never won his home Open. He’s accrued seven top-five finishes but never claimed the trophy, which will be enough inspiration to get the job done … finally.

Sportsbet odds: $34

JIMMY EMANUEL – Golf Australia Deputy & Digital Editor

Mark Hayes has always told me that the Mont Choisy Le Golf produces good players capable of winning South African Opens.

So with that in mind, it has to be DEAM BURMESTER for me here.

Rod Morri – Golf Australia magazine contributor and The Thing About Golf podcast host

Leaving aside the madness of two of the game's oldest national championships being played the same week it is almost always smart to tip a South African to win in South Africa.

While there are some good European Tour players on hand this week in Johannesburg it will be a local lifting the trophy Sunday and that player will be DYLAN FRITTELLI. He didn’t have the best of seasons in the US but will be a force this week regardless.

Sportsbet odds: $34

Mark Hayes – Man About Golf

I still can’t believe a world golfing calendar can hold the world’s third and fourth oldest national open championships in the same week. I’m definitely not saying it’s the good folk in DP-Land who are to blame, but bugger me … I can’t be the only one who thinks this, surely?!?

Given the South Africans’ stunning collective inability to win in Joburg last week, I’m going to get back on them this week to bounce back hard. But I’m going for an amateur to lead them back into the swing in KYLE DE BEER. Mostly because I just want to “get on De Beers” at the end of a long season.

ASIAN TOUR – INDONESIAN MASTERS

Brendan James – Golf Australia Editor

The best name in professional golf, JAZZ JANEWATTANANOND, gets a real chance to claim his second victory within a month.

He’s a class player and his International Series Morocco win might have been the first in a run of victories for the 27-year-old Thai player.

Sportsbet odds: $12

JIMMY EMANUEL – Golf Australia Deputy & Digital Editor

The form that SCOTT HEND has shown of late proves once again that the Queenslander is evergreen and capable of finding his best anywhere and everywhere.

Showed some real signs at Royal Queensland and has committed to playing the Asian Tour as his main circuit next year. Will do it without his normal bagman Tony Carolan who is in Melbourne, but that’s nothing new for one of golf’s longest looper/player partnerships.

There are some big names in the field for the final Asian Tour (and International Series) event of the year. The likes of Bernd Wiesberger, Anirban Lahiri, Lee Westwood and Graeme McDowell might not be at the very top level of the game but are a comfortable step up from most Asian Tour events.

However, it is the likeable Thai star JAZZ JANEWATTANANOND who will be the man to beat this week. Janewattanond won the most recent International Series event in Morocco and at fourth on the International series Order of Merit is not without a chance to take top spot and earn a place in the 2023 LIV Golf league.

I’m not sure how Jakarta gets a Royale course, unless the owner really likes Pulp Fiction.

But as usual, I digress.

I desperately want to tip Indonesian amateur Randy Abernata M. Bintang because his name reminds me of both pro wrestling and Monty Python’s election night sketch.

But Jimmy has me on digress watch, so I’d better straighten up and tip BERND WIESBERGER, one of the most talented in this field and with motivation to go well – that’s always a good double.

PGA TOUR – HERO WORLD CHALLENGE

Brendan James – Golf Australia Editor

CAMERON YOUNG has had a career-best year without hoisting a trophy.

Five runner-up finishes and seven top-10s in 25 events is a great year by any measure, but it would be great for the 25-year-old to take some silverware home from the Bahamas.

Sportsbet odds: $19

JIMMY EMANUEL – Golf Australia Deputy & Digital Editor

JON RAHM has a win and a runner-up at this event and is a last up winner.

Has to be the Spaniard this week.

What a finish to the year it would be for TOM KIM to win Tiger’s tournament in the Bahamas.

Two PGA Tour titles and a brilliant effort in a losing team at the Presidents Cup has made the 20-year-old a star and a third victory of the year here would be icing on the cake.

Mark Hayes – Man About Golf

Admittedly, I haven’t cared about any male golf in the US since the Ryder Cup, but this one is extra special.

I REALLY don’t care.

This is the tournament that has singlehandedly pissed me off more than any other on the international calendar for years.

Not even Jimmy pleading to get us to an other-worldly tipping milestone will get me off my high chair.

As my dear friends of TISM once sang, when it pertains to autumnal American golf, “I’m interested in apathy”.

2022 RESULTS

So far, our so-called experts have combined to tip 39 winners in 2022, with 229 of their picks recording top-10 finishes that week and a best return of $29 for Joohyung Kim to win the Wyndham Championship (tipped by Rod Morri).
