Confirmation of a long-suspected move was confirmed by an official announcement from the Saudi-backed organisation and on social media, with Chile’s Joaquin Niemann, American Harold Varner III and India’s top-ranked pro Anirban Lahiri also now officially LIV players.

Earlier in the week, Cameron Tringale took to social media to confirm his move and PGA Tour membership resignation.

The six new signings all set to make their debut at this week’s LIV Golf Invitational Boston.

Four events remain on the LIV Golf schedule following Boston, with Smith, Leishman likely to be suspended by the PGA Tour once they have struck a shot this week in the same way previous LIV signings have been.

The decision to join the Greg Norman led circuit will also more than likely lead to exclusion from the upcoming Presidents Cup to be played later this month at Quail Hollow in North Carolina.

"LIV Golf is showing the world that our truly global league is attracting the world's best players and will grow the game into the future for the next generation," Norman said.

"The best and the brightest continue to embrace the excitement and energy of LIV Golf and what we're building: a tangible league for team golf that will connect with new audiences all over the globe."

Smith and Niemann are the only automatic selections from Trevor Immelman’s International side that will now be replaced by additional captain’s picks, while Leishman was regularly discussed as a likely choice to play his fifth Presidents Cup.

American captain Davis Love III has not lost any of his automatic qualifiers.

Smith had long been rumoured to be on his way to LIV Golf for a lucrative sum, his future becoming a hot topic since he won The Open at St. Andrews in July and in part due to the Queenslander’s refusal to address the topic when asked by reporters and his bristling response to fellow Aussie Cameron Percy telling RSN radio in Melbourne he was “gone”.

There will now be five Australians in the field in Boston, Smith and Leishman, both set to return to Australia for the ISPS HANDA Australian Open and Fortinet Australian PGA, joined by Matt Jones, Wade Ormsby and Jed Morgan.
