World No.9 Patrick Reed has officially withdrawn from the ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth because of a respiratory infection.
The 26-year-old advised tournament organisers he had been advised by doctors not to travel to from the United States to Western Australia for the event that starts at Lake Karrinyup Country Club on February 16.
Reed was the top-ranked player in the field for the European, Asian and Australasian Tour tri-sanctioned event.
He was forced into three days bed rest last month after catching a virus who had been sick before Christmas. The American admitted at the season-opening Tournament of Champions that his hectic 2016 schedule had left him drained and “burned out”, which had led to him falling ill.
Despite feeling only “80 percent” he managed to finish T6 in Hawaii and was back in action with a T12 at the CareerBuilder Challenge in California last weekend, which included a closing round 65.
Reed had previously expressed his excitement about participating in the unique tournament, which will feature 54 holes of stroke play followed by six-hole match play in the fourth round.
“I am bitterly disappointed not to be competing in the World Super 6 Perth event,” Reed said.
“It was a tournament I was very excited to be playing in; the format had captured my imagination and I was looking forward to the match play component.

“Withdrawing from the event is not a decision I made lightly. I have done everything I can to make the trip possible, but my health and the advice of doctors is not something I can overlook.
“I wish all parties involved with the ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth the best of luck with the tournament.
“To my fans I extend my apologies, I hope that one day I will be able to come to Australia and compete.”
PGA of Australia Chief Commercial Officer Stephen Ayles said it was disappointing to lose a player of Reed’s ability.
“We wish Patrick a speedy recovery and another prosperous season. While this is a disappointment we hope he will be able to come to Australia in the future, a player and entertainer of his calibre is very valued by the Australian public,” Ayles said.
The World Super 6 Perth will now be headlined by World No.10 Alex Noren and will also feature local favourite, amateur Curtis Luck, the reigning US Amateur Champion.
“We are committed to delivering an exciting and unique tournament which will appeal to traditional and new golf fans,” Ayles added.
“We will make further player announcements in the coming days.”
