Matias Sanchez is on the brink of his first Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia victory, holding the 54-hole lead after an impressive third round of Webex Players Series South Australia.
Sanchez finished his Saturday with a 66, taking him 17-under-par with one round to play, with West Australian Haydn Barron signing for on 65 and a 14-under total, followed by Douglas Klein with a 64 (-13) and Adam Bland with 66 to be 12-under.
Sanchez was pleased to see his name at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round after a day of intermittent rain and thunderstorms that caused a suspension of play with the final group through eight holes.
“It's nice to be out there and there's obviously a long way to go, but it's good to play well and to be in contention,” Sanchez said.
The 27-year-old's highlight of the day came late in his round when striking a beautiful iron shot on the par-3 16th, hitting into the pin before settling close and converting for birdie.
“At first, I thought it was unlucky because I thought it was going to come back into the bunker, so I sort of held my reaction. But then when I got up and it was four feet away, I was pretty happy to see it there and you're going to take that any day of the week.”
Sanchez said the conditions were challenging, but just something players have to adapt their game to.
“There was thunder from the fourth hole until they called it when we were on the eighth. We didn't think we were going to come back out there. It was raining, but then you almost checked out and then they called us back out there and it was difficult to kind of get the momentum back.”
Heading into the final day, he admits there’s some work still ahead, but is excited by the opportunity to take out his debut Tour win.
“It’s a long way to go; still a lot of golf and the weather's going to be pretty ordinary tomorrow, so anything can happen. Obviously, a win would be amazing and I'm sure the other players are thinking the exact same thing. But it would mean the world.”
After Round 1 of the All Abilities field, Victorian Tom Ryan leads following a 72, while South Australian Malachy Marshall sits top of the juniors leaderboard, having signed for an even-par 70 playing alongside Barron and Sanchez.
