At last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, Davis took home his first PGA Tour trophy after a five hole play-off following a final round of 67 that saw him finish level with Joaquin Niemann and Troy Merritt.

Niemann was bundled out on the first hole, while Davis failed to convert any of his four winning chances in sudden death before Merritt bogeyed and the 2017 Australian Open winner had a second professional win.

Returning to Detroit Golf Club, Davis took some time to soak in his achievements before getting down to work for “another tournament” which he will play the opening two rounds with last week’s 3M Open winner Tony Finau.

“It's been so cool,” Davis said. “It's awesome walking around the golf course where we had so many defining moments of your career kind of all compressed into one event. I walked around on Monday without a golf club, without a golf ball, just walked around, toured the spots where I hit shots that really made the tournament for me last year.”

Although the positive memories and past glory will help the 27-year-old in his quest to defend the title, am evolved game since and arriving in good form are likely to be more influential.

Adding some power off the tee recently, Davis has five top-10s on Tour this season including two in his last three starts.

Sharing 16th behind Finau last week, Davis noted his excitement in light of where his game is at leading into this week compared with last year.

“Last time I played this event I came here after about a three-week break, my game wasn't in a very good spot. I went back home and took like two weeks of not touching a golf club and just tried to refresh everything and start again basically,” Davis said on Wednesday.

“This time I'm coming in with some decent form, everything's in a pretty good place. I'm hitting my driver a little further now so the course is a little different just off the tee.”

The added distance with driver will be enhanced by firm and fast conditions in Detroit this week, where Davis disclosed he may indulge his new found hobby for disc golf to break up his time away from the course.

“I tried it a couple times, thought it was fun. It's golf, but it's not golf,” he said. “I kind of suck at it still, so it's fun to kind of have a walk around trying to get a little bit better. I enjoy that because that was the stage I went through with golf at one point and obviously I still enjoy it.”

If Davis can repeat his ball striking performance of 2021 this week he will certainly enjoy things. And another good performance will continue to see his name mentioned in relation to Trevor Immelman’s Presidents Cup side.

“It would be so awesome to be on the Presidents Cup. To be honest, I've tried having my goals really big like that and trying to reach them. I feel like when I do that, it almost puts more pressure on me,” Davis said of his Internationals team aspirations.

“I feel like at this point in time, because I am on the outside looking in, I just want to play as well as I possibly can and hopefully get a pleasant surprise. Keep on putting my name up there, keep on churning out good results and trying to get a win, I feel like if I keep doing that, then things will take care of itself.”
