Two late birdies elevated Queensland’s Cassie Porter inside the top 20, as Hannah Green bounced back from a disastrous start to keep her hopes alive at The Amundi Evian Championship in France.
Following a week of reminiscing on her victory from 12 months ago at Evian Resort Golf Club, Sydney’s Grace Kim saw her opening round derailed by a triple-bogey seven at the par-4 12th, dropping shots also at the late par-5s at 15 and 18 to sign for a 2-over 73 to be in a tie for 87th.
It was a far less dramatic start for Porter, who had four birdies and two bogeys in her round of 2-under 69.
Making her second start at Evian, having missed the cut last year, Porter started brightly with a birdie at the par-4 first, the 23-year-old turning even par after making bogey at the par-3 eighth.
She was back in red figures thanks to a birdie at the par-4 12th and then closed with birdies at 16 and 18 either side of a bogey at the par-4 17th.
In just her second season on the LPGA Tour, Porter has played six majors prior to this week, her best result coming earlier this year with a tie for 34th at the Chevron Championship in Texas.
She is in a share of 20th alongside Kiwi great Lydia Ko, with Japan’s Aki Iwai two strokes clear at the top of the leaderboard courtesy of an 8-under 63.
Green’s hopes of a second major championship looked remote when she made a double-bogey at the par-3 fifth and followed it up with further dropped shots at six and seven.
Yet with four wins to her name already in 2026, it seemed to shock the West Australian into action.
A birdie at the par-3 eighth was the first of three in succession, the 29-year-old adding two more at 12 and 14 to drag herself back into red figures and a round of 1-under 70 to be in a tie for 35th.
Continuing her recent strong performances at the U.S Women’s Open and KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, Karis Davidson also shot 70 despite some frustrations on the greens.
At a career high of No.54 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Ranking, the Gold Coaster hit 12 of 13 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in a tremendous ball-striking performance, but needed 32 putts in a round of three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars.
Another Gold Coaster, Robyn Choi, showed strong spirit to fight back from three early bogeys to post 2-over 73. Kelsey Bennett played her final 10 holes in 1-under in a round of 74 in her first major championship in three years.
The champion five years ago, Minjee Lee shot 6-over 77, hitting just six of 13 fairways; much of the damage done with a double-bogey at the par-4 13th and a triple-bogey at the par-4 fourth.
