The American domination of the Puerto Rico Open has continued with veteran D.A. Points claiming victory by a single stroke.
It was Points’ third PGA Tour win and his first since the 2013 Houston Open.
The 41-year-old started the final day one shot back of countryman Chris Stroud, but got off to a hot start, birdieing his first five holes at the Coco Beach Golf and Country Club. Points provided a simple formula for his quick start.
“I just hit it in the fairway and I hit it right at the flag and tapped it in. It was pretty fun,” he said.
His charge spluttered with three bogeys over his next five holes, but the University of Illinois product managed to right the ship and add a further four birdies on the back nine, including holing a 16-foot putt on the last, to finish at 20 under par. One shot back were fast finishing Retief Goosen and American pair Bryson Dechambeau and Bill Lunde.

Points, who lost his PGA Tour card in 2016 and only regained it via the Web.com Tour playoff series, said doubts crept in to his mind if success would come his way again after his struggles since his last win.
“I was just really proud of myself for finding some way, hitting about as low as I've ever been golf-wise and finding my way out, and then to be able to hang in there and win today is something that I wasn't sure if I had in me and I'm really proud of myself,” he said.
As an alternate event to a World Golf Championship, the victory doesn’t earn Points an exemption into The Masters, it does however guarantee starts in The Players and US PGA Championships in 2017, as well as a two year PGA Tour exemption.
Victorian Cameron Percy was the best of the Aussies, finishing in a tie for 24th place at 13 under.
