Australian David McKenzie has recorded his equal best finish on the PGA Tour Champions after a stop-start schedule in recent months that led to a struggle for consistency.
The Victorian closed with a final round of six-under 66, the second best round of the day, to finish alone in second by two shots at the Boeing Classic from Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez.
Making six birdies in the first 12 holes, with no bogeys on his card on Sunday, McKenzie had his chances coming in to claim his first Senior Tour win, but the 55-year-old was happy to hold on to the runner-up spot.
“I was sucking air the last six holes,” McKenzie said. “I was like just trying to get it close to the hole and give myself a chance and do nothing stupid, and fortunately I didn't do anything stupid, but I didn't make any putts. So yeah, it was hard work into the last.”
“It's the first time I think all year that I have played two tournaments in a row. So hopefully, that's just a bit of continuity to feel like I'm playing well, give myself chances, and hopefully that will continue." - David McKenzie.
The second time McKenzie has managed a runner-up on the over-50s circuit, McKenzie has had scarce chances to play on the Tour in 2022 despite playing good golf.
“I have been playing well for a year, but I hadn't been playing,” he said. “Played one week, there was a week off. The next week, the Senior PGA. Scraped in, got into the next one. But my preparation wasn't good that week for Des Moines. Missed the next week, went home. So I had four weeks off. I came back, I played the Senior Players. Then I went to the U.K. to play the Senior British Open, missed the qualifying. So I had another three weeks off.
“It's the first time I think all year that I have played two tournaments in a row. So hopefully, that's just a bit of continuity to feel like I'm playing well, give myself chances, and hopefully that will continue. I don't know what's going to happen.”
McKenzie now sits in 45th on the Schwab Cup standings, while Jimenez’s third victory of the season, and 13th on the Tour overall, has him in third place.
