Changes to include LIV golfers in the world ranking points system are welcome yet still unfair, Spanish great Sergio Garcia says.

Australia's Elvis Smylie is the early beneficiary of changes to the Official World Golf Rankings system, which this year includes LIV golfers for the first time.

Smylie won LIV Golf's season-opening tournament in Saudi Arabia last weekend and jumped from world No.133 to 77th.

But 2017 US Masters champion Garcia believes the changes, which only give points to top-10 finishers at a LIV tournament, don't go far enough.

"It's a step forward," Garcia said in Adelaide on Tuesday.

"Is it fair? I mean, time will tell us. It doesn't feel like it is probably fair.

"Obviously now, the first few weeks when one of us is winning then obviously that guy is going to make a jump in the rankings which is great.

"But then every time you finish 11th or lower, you're getting a zero and getting an extra event on your divisor.

"So that, in the near (and) a little farther future, it can hurt a lot.

"But it's a step forward, it is positive."

Garcia, in South Australia for LIV Golf's Adelaide tournament starting Thursday, said the changes would help younger golfers such as Smylie.

"It's going to help some of these kids performing well to move up the rankings, hopefully they play really well," he said.

"But unfortunately only 10 guys can finish in the top 10, well, unless there's a couple of ties.

"It would be nice if it was expanded a little bit farther as we probably think it should. But hopefully it will come soon."
