It is still a little over four months until the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship gets underway, with the Australian Open to follow, but both events already have a PGA Tour winner confirmed in the field.
Rising Australian star Lucas Herbert will return home and tee it up at both events starting with the PGA Championship at Royal Queensland which commences on November 24.
“I am extremely excited to be returning to Australia to play both the Aus Open and PGA, I have missed being able to play in both of these events the last couple years and am really looking forward to returning this year,” Herbert said.
Winner of the Bermuda Championship in 2021 and twice a winner on the DP World Tour, Herbert will hope his homecoming comes after a maiden Presidents Cup appearance for Trevor Immelman’s Internationals side at Quail Hollow.
Sharing 15th last week at The Open Championship behind Aussie winner Cam Smith, who many hope will follow suit and play our two biggest local events, Herbert has contended at the Australian Open when played in Sydney and will find both courses to his liking.
“I am putting more preparation into it this year and am hoping to win one if not both of these events. It is also great to be able to be home and see everyone during these events.” - Lucas Herbert.
“It would mean the world to me,” he said when asked of winning one or both titles. “Australian golf is so important to me and to be able to win at home is something I have always dreamed of doing – it is a huge goal of mine.
“I have played Royal Queensland a handful of times since moving there (to Queensland), I unfortunately didn’t get to play the Australian PGA this year when it was at RQ. It is a great design and a great tournament venue as well. I’ve played Kingston Heath a lot as junior and amateur, and once as a pro at Geoff Ogilvy’s event. I’ve been to the Sandbelt Classic a number of times but haven’t played it since the green redo at Victoria.”
Hebert is somewhat at home for both events as a now resident of Queensland when he is back from his Florida base, while the Bendigo product has spent much of his formative golfing years on the Melbourne Sandbelt.
Playing the Sandbelt Invitational last year, the 43rd ranked player on the FedExCup standings absorbed as much information as he could from tournament host Geoff Ogilvy during a round together and imparted as much wisdom as he could on the juniors as he could. Showcasing him as a determined professional with an understanding of his role when returning home.
When doing so this year, the 26-year-old hopes to avoid the typical end of year fatigue as he chases a first pro win in Australia.
“I am putting more preparation into it this year and am hoping to win one if not both of these events. It is also great to be able to be home and see everyone during these events.”
And you can count the World No.52 as a fan of the decision to play the men’s and women’s Australian Opens concurrently.
“I think it is great that the Australian Open is providing a stage for both men’s and women’s golf, the professionals on the ladies tours are extremely impressive and it is great we will be able to share an event with them this year at the Australian Open.”
