Many predicted the 19-9 result in favour of the United States at the 2021 Ryder Cup signalled the start of a dominant period for the Americans. However Europe have set the wheels in motion to be better prepared when the teams next meet in Italy.
Announced today at the BMW PGA Championship, the DP World Tour’s flagship event, the new Hero Cup will be played from January 13-15 at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club with improved Ryder Cup performance in mind.
The event will see two ten player teams, one representing Great Britain & Ireland and one Continental Europe, go head-to-head in a match play format with European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald overseeing proceedings.
Donald will work with the two playing captains and be on hand to watch potential team members in a Ryder Cup like format as he attempts to bring together a team that will likely be without team veterans Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia, among others, due to their signing with LIV Golf.
“One of the first things I was keen to do when I was appointed as Ryder Cup Captain was to reinstate a team match play contest to give playing and leadership experience to future Ryder Cup players, vice-captains and Captains,” Donald, who took over the captaincy from Henrik Stenson when the Swede himself joined the Saudi backed league, told the Tour’s website.
“I spoke to a number of former Ryder Cup Captains who were strong advocates of how similar events in the past have benefitted players who were pushing to make Ryder Cup teams, as well as their own captaincy journey.”
All 20 players will take part in each session of the event that will feature one session of foursomes, one session of fourballs and one session of singles matches.
The teams will be decided at the conclusion of the DP World Tour Championship later this year.
