MODEL PLAYED: Dot PLX 2D Parallax putter.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: The concept is a good idea. After a few practice strokes I already felt comfortable with it because my eyes locked onto both sets of dots straight away. As soon as I got over the putter I could tell my eyes were over the ball, which helps your confidence on the greens. I also like the weight of the putter and the way it sits flat
at address.
VERDICT: The Dot PLX putter suits me down to a T. All those observations I made as ‘first impressions’ rang true on the golf course – and I ended up using it for several rounds. I’ve lost a shot from my handicap since I started putting with it.
The alignment system led me to stroke more putts on line than usual from all lengths and to trust my stroke more. I also found my distance control improved as a result, particularly on putts longer than 20 feet. It might be easy to concentrate too much on the line and seeing the dots but then forget to get the speed of the putt right, but the more I used it the more I was able to get both elements to gel. I’ve putted really well with it; I’m very happy using the Dot
PLX putter.
MODEL PLAYED: Dot PLX 2D Parallax putter.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Standing over it I can see every single dot so that’s a good start! There’s an interesting weight distribution to the putter – like there’s less weight in the head and more in the grip.
VERDICT: The idea behind the Dot PLX putter is good but maybe it’s better as a practice aid? I found it useful for telling me that my stance and lining up of the putter were correct. That may not be the same for everybody because putting is a very individual thing, but standing over it I could always see both sets of dots so that gave me confidence in my setup. If you practised on the putting green or at home in your lounge room and used the Dot PLX putter to get your set-up correct then took that stance and muscle memory to your regular putter, I think that would be the perfect combination.
The putterhead feels very light and impact produces a fairly pronounced ‘ting’ sound. I kept making sweet contact with it but the sound is very recognisable. I didn’t hole a lot of putts today with the Dot PLX but I did lip out a lot so I must have been close to getting my alignment right. I’d like to practise with it more.
SUITABILITY: All golfers.
THE SCIENCE: The Dot PLX is a peripheral-weighted T-putter featuring a polished stainless steel face machined with 13 horizontal grooves in an oval sweet spot, designed to impart maximum roll when impacting the equator of the ball on the upstroke. The patented Dot PLX 2D Parallax Alignment System helps ensure a correct and properly aligned putting stroke is replicated every time, imparting a target-line stroke with consistent roll.
SPECIFICATIONS: The head material is machined stainless steel and weighs 357 grams. The loft is 1.5° and the grip is X Tack ergonomic soft leather. Available in 33.5-inch or 34-inch shaft lengths.
LEFT-HANDED MODELS?: Yes.
HOW MUCH?: $199.
DOT PUTTER SAYS: “The new Dot PLX 2D Parallax putter was invented in Australia by master WGTF instructor Kevin O’Neill. Working similar to a rifle sight, the Dot Putter’s two-dimensional alignment system uses the parallax principle to ensure golfers’ eyes are locked in at the back of the ball directly over the centreline to impart a putting stroke that impacts the ball on the upswing at the equator, every single time – something no one-dimensional alignment putter can do. This takes head position and stance errors out of the equation to enable golfers to make a consistent putting stroke with maximum roll on both long and short putts.
“With correct alignment and stance locked in, all the golfer then needs to do is get the target line and strength of putt right. And that, as we all know, is hard enough!”
