In the search for increased and more consistent spin, Callaway has refined and improved its JAWS grooves. The company describing the new iteration incorporated in the JAWS MD5 wedges as “the most aggressive grooves in golf”.
Constructed from soft 8620 mild carbon steel under the watchful eye of the company’s Chief Designer and master wedge maker Roger Cleveland, the new model offers refined shaping, versatility and improved performance from every lie, while also being offered in two finishes and five sole grinds to suit any and all turf conditions and player preferences.
To increase spin significantly over the previous MD4 model, the JAWS MD5’s new grooves feature a sharper edge, with the walls, edges and angles milled into the face for precision and tighter tolerances.
Lying on the flat surfaces of the face between the more aggressive new grooves are milled ‘Micro-Positive’ grooves to further increase the contact with the cover of the ball at impact. The combination of the additional micro grooves, which Callaway calls “Groove-In-Groove technology”, and the new JAWS groove crating increased surface roughness and 84 different contact points to raise spin and control.
“The spin you get from the JAWS Groove is remarkable,” Cleveland said. “From the control that you get around the green, with all of that spin, and a lower launch angle, it’s designed to deliver an incredible level of performance for every player.”
In addition to the new groove design, the JAWS MD5 also incorporates a more precisely placed centre of gravity (CG) for ball flight control, while the range of S-Grind, W-Grind, C-Grind, X-Grind and a new low-bounce version of the W-Grind sole options offer a variety of bounce angles to suit varying conditions and attack angles.
Offered in ‘Platinum Chrome’ and ‘Tour Grey’ finishes and with True Temper 115 steel and Project X Catalyst 80 graphite shafts as standard, the new model will be available in Australian golf shops from September 27.
RRP: $249.99.
