Following in the footsteps of last year’s Epic range and incorporating its ‘Jailbreak’ technology Callaway’s new Rogue drivers and fairways are designed for further ball speed increases as well as enhanced forgiveness.
Offered in standard, Draw and Sub Zero models the Rogue driver utilises modified jailbreak technology to deliver increased ball speeds across a larger area of the face. And have already made a mark on golf’s biggest stage, with 17 players putting a Rogue driver in play at the PGA Tour’s Sony Open and Chris Paisley claiming his maiden European Tour win with a Rogue driver in the bag at the South African Open.
Like the original jailbreak technology found in the Epic and Epic Sub Zero, two parallel titanium bars sit behind the driver face and are connected to the sole and crown to stiffen the body and allow the face to take more of the load at impact. Where the Rogue’s jailbreak differs is in its new ‘hour-glass’ shape, which reduces weight by 25 percent allowing for a thinner face and improved energy transfer.
“Designing a driver that would surpass the performance of the current No.1 Driver in the U.S. was a significant challenge and Rogue is the result of exhaustive research and a new ball-speed recipe we call ‘Jailbreak Effect’ – specifically, how Rogue’s new Jailbreak hourglass-shaped titanium rods work in tandem with Callaway’s new proprietary X-Face VFT face technology,” Senior Vice President, Research and Development at Callaway Golf Dr. Alan Hocknell said.
All three versions of the driver feature the new X—Face VFT face architecture, which incorporates strategically placed thicker and thinner areas of the face to improve ball speed on mis-hits.
Through the use of the largest ‘Triaxial Carbon’ crown in company history, saved weight is then optimally placed around the perimeter of the head to increase forgiveness and improve moment of inertia (MOI), which minimises the effect off-centre strikes have on ball speed.
Featuring a larger footprint than Epic, the new Rogue models also benefit from a collaboration between Callaway and Boeing to produce an aerodynamic head design that improves clubhead speed through refined ‘Speed Step’ geometry on the crown.
The Rogue Draw differs to the standard model, which the company suggests will offer relatively low spin, high forgiveness and high ball speed, through internal heel weighting and an external five-gram weight screw designed to help fight a left-to-right ball flight.
Designed primarily with Tour players in mind, the Sub Zero driver is ideal for any player who creates too much spin with driver thanks to its high-MOI and low and deep centre of gravity (CG). The resulting high launch and low spin is also able to be further fine-tuned through two interchangeable weights (2g and 14g), which when rotated between the front and back positions offer 200 rpm of spin rate adjustment.
Released alongside the new drivers, two Rogue fairway wood models mark the first time Callaway have incorporated its jailbreak technology into a club other than driver.
Made from steel, unlike the titanium version used in the driver of the same name, the jailbreak rods are cast into the body of the fairway wood and work in combination with the company’s ‘Hyper Speed Face Cup’ technology to deliver increased ball speed, especially on off centre hits.
“Bringing Jailbreak technology to our fairway woods, and making it work in harmony with our other market-leading technologies, quite simply, moves the performance dial beyond anything we’ve previous achieved,” Hocknell said.
Similarly to the drivers both the standard and Sub Zero model fairway woods incorporate a triaxial carbon crown to save weight that is then repositioned for increased MOI and optimal CG, which is precisely placed through the use of Callaway’s ‘Internal Standing Wave’ technology originally developed for the company’s irons.
Offering a “strong, straight flight” the standard Rogue fairway is offered in lofts ranging from 3+ all the way to an 11-wood.
Designed for low spin, the Sub Zero fairway boasts a low and forward CG that is achieved in part thanks to a five-gram weight screw in the sole and is available in 3+, 3 and 5-woods.
Rogue drivers and fairway woods are available starting February 23.
