A long-hitting, high-flying club for the mid-markers out there sounds like something for our testers.

callaway-diablo-edge-ironsTESTER: Peter Andrew

HANDICAP: 15

MODEL AND SHAFT PLAYED: Callaway Diablo Edge irons 4-iron to pitching wedge fitted with Callaway Golf Diablo Edge graphite shafts.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: The look of these irons was very comforting. I’m a fan of bigger, thicker irons. The size of the topline is not something that lower markers would be aspiring to, but it just gives the higher marker more confidence.

VERDICT: The Diable Edge certainly performs the way you would expect from an iron that looks like this – every iron was a half a club longer than what I’d usually get out of my normal iron distances. It was very easy to get the ball up in the air, although I thought that might have something to do with the shaft. Playing from the rough, the weight in the clubhead was very helpful in getting the ball out.

I found the feel to be similar to my current set, and off-centre hits travelled very well. I didn’t notice much offset, but I do remember that I was getting more right-to-left flight during the round – unusual because I commonly cut the ball.

The results were very convincing. On the 3rd hole of the road test, I hit a good, solid 6-iron to three feet. That’s as close as I had been on that hole for a while.

CALLAWAY SAYS: “The Diablo Edge is the longest stainless steel iron we’ve ever created, providing increased distance without compromising feel or performance.

“The lower, deeper centre of gravity makes the sweet spot more accessible and is in line with where amateurs most commonly hit the ball on the clubface, generating longer, consistent distance and improved accuracy.

“Delivering smooth turf interaction, the sole is designed to mitigate the effects of heavy and thin shots and improve the impact location on the face for greater distance.

“Callaway Golf core technologies, like VFT, S2H2, a 360-Degree Undercut Channel and Modified Tru-Bore work, together to maximise distance, feel and playability.”
