The Spaniard hit into the water on the second extra hole in Sunday's finale, a third LIV Golf play-off loss for Garcia and his second this year.

The 2017 Masters champion, who has yet to win since joining LIV Golf when it launched in 2022, looked to have this one in hand when he holed a 40-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole, and then took the lead when Burmester bogeyed the 18th at Trump National Doral.

But Garcia badly missed a 4-foot par putt on the 18th hole and shot 70, leaving the pair tied at 11-under 205, one shot ahead of Matthew Wolff.

Marc Leishman was the highest-finishing Australian, sharing fourth place with former World No.1 Jon Rahm and England's Tyrrell Hatton after a final-round two-under-par 70 highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 16th.

Both Garcia and Burmester made par on the 18th on the first play-off hole but he second time around, Garcia came up short of the green and into the water.

Burmester made a three-foot par putt for the win, giving him the $US4 million ($A6 million) prize.

"I've been at the receiving end of this," Burmester said.

"I felt like I played great (but) I hadn't got it done. Sergio gave me a lifeline."

Burmester won for the third time in the last five months, having also saluted at the Johannesburg Open and South African Open late last year, events co-sanctioned by the DP World and Sunshine tours.

Masters champion Rahm heads to Augusta National without having won in a year as an individual, although his Legion XIII team won for the third time in six LIV events.
